A simple fuel service could keep your car in check and save you money on costly fuel bills.

We reveal how to reduce your fuel consumption by ten per cent – for free.

As part of ‘Green car month,’ Total Eco 10 and Nationwide Autocentre are holding free green car surgeries to help motorists reduce their CO2 emissions.

This could prevent the UK from producing 17.2 million tonnes of CO2 emissions by March 2010 – the same as 27,000 return flights to New York.

Motorists can also receive advice on reducing emissions and improving fuel efficiency.

Car enthusiast and model Jodie Kidd said: “While many are concerned about the effect we have on the environment, most of us are not prepared to give up our car – or simply can’t.

“The Total Eco 10 green car surgeries will take just a few minutes and should give motorists the friendly green nudge to bring good eco habits already practiced in the home – onto our roads.”

What’s checked?

• Oil
• Brakes
• Clutch
• Coolant
• Tyre pressure

A study found 58 per cent of motorists don’t regularly check their oil or tyre pressure. And 44 per cent leave the air-conditioning on, even when unnecessary.

Where are the savings made?

Here’s how that ten per cent fuel consumption reduction is achieved:

• Advanced fuel – 4 per cent
• Fuel economy lubricant – 3 per cent
• Correct maintenance – 2 per cent
• Optimum tyre pressure – 1 per cent

More money-saving servicing secrets

1. Shop around

One of the easiest ways to save is to shop around for the best deal. Ask friends and relatives who they recommend and visit several garages to get some written quotes.

Always choose an established and reputable garage – preferably one with membership of a recognised trade association, such as the Motor Vehicles Repairers Association (MVRA).

2. Timing is everything

Get the most from a service for the least amount of money by striking a balance. Service too often and the bills will add up – leave it too long and costly problems could develop.

At least one full service per year is recommended, or every 10,000 miles. Air filters may need changing every 6,000 miles. Some manufacturers may advise shorter or longer periods – check your vehicle handbook for more information.

3. Don’t avoid a service

If your car is due a service, try not to put it off. It’s important to get the engine checked and the brake pads changed, which lose their stopping power when worn down.

Regular servicing may also improve the fuel efficiency and value of your car, as well as identify any potential problems early on.

4. Get an inspection

If you have free servicing and repairs with your manufacturer, book a professional car inspection a month or so before your contract expires.

If a major problem is found, you can use your manufacturer’s repair scheme to fix it – potentially saving you hundreds of pounds.
