We round up the most fuel-efficient cars

The all-new Toyota Prius hybrid goes on sale this weekend. Using its petrol engine, batteries and electric motor it can achieve 72.4mpg while emitting only 90g/km.

Here are five other cars which better 70mpg.

Cars with good fuel economy can run longer before they need re-filling and usually emit less CO2, making them eco-friendly and cheaper to tax.

A car’s average MPG figure – or miles per gallon – is its fuel consumption rate, and represents the average number of miles it can reach on one gallon of fuel.

It is calculated from a series of tests made on a completely flat 11km route. The urban cycle test consists of accelerations, steady speeds, decelerations and idling, with an average speed of 12mpg. The extra-urban cycle test includes driving at a maximum speed of 75mph.

A combined figure is calculated as an average of the two tests, and generally represents a car’s fuel efficiency.
