Land Rover Freelander
£20,877-£32,201
The car that kick-started the junior SUV class nearly a decade ago is back and better than ever. Although the looks are very similar to the first-generation car, the new Freelander is completely new and features an upmarket Range Rover-inspired cabin.

Honda CR-V
£18,630-£25,557
Always a big hit with British buyers, the CR-V was updated with a new chassis and a fresh new look in 2006. Like its best-selling predecessor, the Honda is beautifully built and delivers a smooth, refined drive. Frugal 2.2iCDTi turbodiesel is the one to go for.

Nissan X-Trail
£19,245-£26,565
It may look virtually identical to its best-selling predecessor, but the second-generation X-Trail is all-new. The Qashqai-based body is now longer and passenger space has been improved all-round. Upmarket dashboard looks good, too.

Vauxhall Antara
£20,695-£25,805
A long-awaited replacement for the Frontera, the Antara shares a platform and running gear with the Chevrolet Captiva. Although there’s not a seven seat version as there is with the Chevy, the 2.0-litre diesel is a strong unit and it’s a well-built package.

Toyota RAV4
£19,620-£22,555
With its amazingly strong residual values, the RAV4 has always been a firm favourite with buyers. The current version carries on the good work with chunky good looks, a bigger, more flexible cabin and even higher build quality. It’s entertaining to drive, too.
Hyundai Santa Fe
£21,535-£26,115
There’s no stopping Hyundai. The Korean firm changes its line-up more often than most people change their socks, and this second generation Santa Fe is proof that the firm is going places fast. It looks great, drives well and represents fine value for money.

Chevrolet Captiva
£16,639-£23,783
Sharing a platform with the Vauxhall Antara, the big Chevy is one of the firm’s best offerings to date. The seven-seat cabin is spacious and value is high.

Peugeot 4007
£23,195-£25,795
Co-developed with Citroen and Mitsubishi, the 4007 is a bold-looking SUV with space for seven. Not the best off-road but comfy and refined on long hauls.
Citroen C-Crosser
£20,195-£25,795
Citroen’s take on the PSA/Mitsubishi SUV design is arguably the best-looking of the three. Kit levels are high and the 2.2 HDi engine is one of the best on the market.

Mitsubishi Outlander
£19,260-£26,690
The first-generation Outlander may have been forgettable, but the new version is right on the money. It drives well, seats seven and is excellent value for money.
