11 November 2008

Twenty-two years ago, the Ferrari F40 became the first production car to break the 200mph barrier, hitting 201mph.

But now there’s no shortage of double-tonners – and Auto Trader’s got one of the world’s largest forecourts. Adrian Hearn shows you what’s available right now.

Koenigsegg CCX-R
Price: £1,500,000
Top speed: 254mph+
Number on Auto Trader: 1

The Koenigsegg CCX-R is the world’s most expensive new car, costing a cool £1.5 million. But then again it’s quite a machine. It will accelerate from 0-62mph (100kph) in 2.9 seconds, 0-124mph (200kph) in 8.75 seconds and all the way to a tested top speed of 254mph.

At Top Gear Live, Jeremy Clarkson mentioned how excited he was about the prospect of getting one on the show.  There’s only one in the UK and it’s for sale with Broughtons in Gloucestershire.

Bugatti Veyron
Price: £865,000 - £1,050,000
Top speed: 253mph
Number on Auto Trader: 3

The Bugatti Veyron isn’t a car, it’s a celebrity. See one in public and you’ll see a dozen wide-eyed fans filming it on their mobile phones. And it’s not hard to understand why – it was the first car to hit more than 250mph and 0-62mph takes just 2.5 seconds.

And the seven-speed semi-automatic gearbox (another first) took 50 engineers five years to perfect.

Koenigsegg CCR
Price: £339,950
Top speed: 245mph
Number on Auto Trader: 1

If you can’t afford the £1.5m CCX-R, you could save £1.15m and get the almost-as-mad Koenigsegg CCR. Formerly the world’s fastest car, the 806bhp CCR will accelerate from 0-62mph in 3.2 seconds and hit 245mph.

And when you buy a Koenigsegg, Broughtons will fly you out to Sweden to meet the team where founder Christian Koenigsegg will show you what his cars are capable of at the company’s HQ.

Ferrari Enzo
Price: £675,000 - £999,999
Top speed: 217mph

The Enzo is the fastest ever standard production Ferrari, capable of hitting 62mph in 3.5 seconds before running on to 217mph. It was built between 2002 and 2005 with just 399 ever being built – because Ferrari figured there was demand for 400. And Ferrari tend to build one less than the demand to maintain exclusivity.

Ford GT
Price: £116,995 - £169,995
Top speed: 205mph – 221mph

Bugatti EB110
Price: £299,995
Top speed: 212mph
Number on Auto Trader: 1

A decade and a bit before the Veyron went on sale, Bugatti had another 200mph+ dream machine in the EB110. It got its name EB from the initials of founder Ettore Bugatti and 110 to mark 110 years since his birth. As with the Veyron, the EB110 had a quad-turbocharged engine – in this case a 3.5-litre V12. Zero-62mph took 3.4 seconds and the EB110 would run out of steam at 212mph.

Lamborghini Murcielago
Price: £74,990 - £240,000
Top speed: 205mph – 211mph
Number on Auto Trader: 25

There was a time when Lamborghinis were widow-making cars with crazy designs and suspect reliability. But times have changed. They’re still radical looking but thanks to their Audi ownership and (in most cases) four-wheel drive, they are much easier and safer to drive.

The top Murcielago is the LP640 which is capable of 211mph and will attract a premium due to its exclusivity. But the standard and convertible models are both capable of 205mph. And they’ve got the awesome upward-opening doors.
