Lewis Hamilton thought he’d won the Belgian Grand Prix.

He’d gone wheel-to-wheel with world champion Kimi Raikkonen, and passed his rival. As rain poured onto the Spa circuit – which is the most challenging track in F1 even when dry – Hamilton kept his cool while Raikkonen crashed out.

On the podium he celebrated jubilantly – but two hours after the chequered flag had fallen the Belgian GP stewards took his win away.

The stewards claimed Hamilton had gained an unfair advantage while racing Raikkonen.

On lap 42 the pair had gone side-by-side into the final chicane, and halfway through it Raikkonen had squeezed Hamilton off the track. That put Hamilton ahead of Raikkonen, so the McLaren driver slowed down to let the Ferrari past. Having done that, he passed Raikkonen again at the following corner.

The race had begun on a damp circuit and Hamilton had lost the lead to Raikkonen on lap two after spinning.

Although the track was dry for most of the race Hamilton caught Raikkonen quickly once the rain returned six laps from the end of the race. By the final two laps the track was so wet some drivers who had put wet weather tyres on found themselves up to half a minute quicker than the leaders.

This led to incredible scenes as Hamilton and Felipe Massa crawled home first and second on dry weather tyres. Behind them Nick Heidfeld, who had switched to wet weather tyres, gained five places on the final lap.

Fernando Alonso also made the switch and finished fourth. Afterwards he rued not changing tyres on the same lap as Heidfeld, feeling he would have won the race if he had.

But the widely-criticised decision to penalise Hamilton 25 seconds, dropping him from first to third, took the pleasure out of what had been a fine race at a classic F1 circuit.
