21 December 2007 Dominic Sacco looks at supercar clubs and track days. The Marque II car club If driving a Maserati feels like singing to a crowded London bar, then sitting behind the wheel of the only Maserati GT in the whole of the UK feels like playing Wembley Arena. The Maserati GT produces 405bhp, goes from 0-60mph in around five seconds before reaching a top speed of 177mph – and now YOU can drive one. Car club Marque II offers the Italian supercar alongside a whole host of other dream motors, including a Ferrari 360 Spyder, Range Rover Sport, Audi R8 and more. The average annual cost of running such a car is £20,000. But joining a club like Marque II gives you access to a range of supercars, and allows two people to join for £4,000 a year. The price includes EU driving, congestion charges, delivery and collection – so you can be on the road in a Jaguar XKR or Alfa Romeo 8c almost straight away. For more information call 0207 582 2223 or visit the Marque II website. CLUBGT This London car club offers high performance vehicles such as the Porsche GT3, Ferrari 550 Maranello and Lancia Delta Integrale for you to fulfil your supercar driving dreams. CLUBGT's Chris Burbidge says: "The cars have been chosen for their outstanding performance, iconic status and driver focused nature. They also happen to be quite rare and difficult to find. "The majority are not available from other clubs or hire companies," he said. It costs £250 to join with an annual membership fee of £3,750, which corresponds to 4,000 points. Car insurance and maintenance is inclusive. Points can be exchanged for time with the cars – so driving a Lamborghini Gallardo for 200 miles on a summer day would use up 460 points. Check out their website at www.clubgt.co.uk or call 0207 935 8485. Ferrari vs. Porsche If you can’t decide which is better – zooming down a straight in a Ferrari 360 Modena or taking a hairpin in a Porsche 911, then this day is for you. The Porsche has the upper hand in terms of power, with 415bhp, a top speed of 193mph and will get from 0-60mph in just under four seconds. The Ferrari 360 boasts a 3.6-litre V8 engine, a top speed of 186mph and reaches 0-60mph in 4.5seconds. The maximum power output is 395bhp. A group of up to twelve people can enter, and spectators are free to watch (so you can show off to your family or friends). Visit the Track Days website – and book a day at circuits including Donington Park, Teeside and Oxfordshire.
There’s a whole host of other exhilarating racing days to experience, from the mind-bendingly fast to the plain bizarre. Some circuits like Brands Hatch allow you to bring your own car to drive around the track, with no speed restrictions – perfect for pushing driving skills and your motor to the limit. You’ll drive a Vauxhall VX220 as well as your own car – or you can stay inside the sporty VX220 for an extra fee. Rally and 4x4 driving days offer the challenge of climbing muddy hills, traversing across rocky paths and taking sharp turns. Auto Trader’s Alex Eckford took part in a Grand Cherokee 4x4 driving day earlier this year. Car skidding days make a perfect fun gift for those who want to experience the thrill of drifting or learning how to control a skid. Read our how to avoid skidding feature for more tips on overcoming skids this winter. We pick a selection of great track days: 1. Brands Hatch advanced track driving school, Kent. 2. Skid control day at Manby Motorplex, Lincolnshire. 3. 4x4 Road driving experience at Rockingham Motor Speedway, Northamptonshire. |
