14 December 2007 Dominic Sacco looks at previous England managers' cars and picks the most likely motor for Capello to drive. As an Italian, Capello has no doubt seen his fair share of supercars, whether it’s a Lamborghini or a Ferrari. And with a three year-deal offering him £4m a year, money won’t be an object. The previous Real Madrid manager has been spotted being chauffeured in an Audi A8, but this German manufacturer is only the first possibility. A top contender for the position on Capello’s driveway is the Lamborghini LM002 – a 4x4 monster more than capable of getting the new England boss from the stadium to the training ground. And the number one potential car for Fabio Capello?
This refined four-door estate will set Capello back £86,000, but its luxurious extras are worth it – featuring a lusty 400bhp V8 engine and four-door practicality. The Maserati can go from 0-60mph in around five seconds, and reaches a top speed of 167mph, providing Capello with some much-needed power alongside its elegant style. The executive model can stress any driver’s importance, and the Italian should feel at So what did his predecessors drive? Glenn Hoddle This ex-Tottenham star drove a Volvo V70 while guiding the national squad to the 1998 World Cup tournament. The V70 is spacious enough for the family and boasts an executive appearance – making it well suited to an England manager. Sven-Göran Eriksson This well-known Swede has one thing in common with Capello – he managed to get picked for the position of England manager despite being born outside of England. His five-year reign came to an end in 2006, but what car did the Swedish international drive? It was none other than the Volvo XC90 – an SUV which created the perfect Swedish double act.
Kevin Keegan succeeded Hoddle as manager in 1999 and also followed in his footsteps by driving an estate. But will it influence Fabio Capello on his choice of car? A younger curly-haired Keegan played for German club Hamburger SV in 1979, and was seen driving with his family in an old Mercedes E-Class estate. Bobby Robson The popular football pundit and one time Newcastle manager once owned a BMW 7-series, which was for sale on Auto Trader earlier this year. England manager's BMW for sale. Bobby Robson opted for a luxurious choice of car – perhaps Capello will follow suit and choose a similar vehicle.
The man who led England to a near-victory in the 1996 European finals used to drive a Mercedes CL. We reckon Capello will choose a car from a German manufacturer like Mercedes, if he doesn't go for the Maserati or Lamborghini. |
