20 November 2007 This year’s Los Angeles Motor Show is a battle between two opposing forces - green cars and petrol-hungry movie classics. Andy Goodwin takes a look at the vehicles vying for centre stage. Honda has stolen the show this year, unveiling the FCX Clarity fuel-cell car. It stands to be the first ever production car to use the notoriously tricky fuel source. Because of the huge cost involved in building each car, it’s likely less than 100 to be built and driven by specially selected customers on a lease only scheme. The Bullitt Mustang harks back to the Highland Green car we all know and love from the movie, with black-spoke wheels and a dual exhaust tuned to sound just how we remember. With 325bhp under its hood the Mustang is a guilty pleasure. The ‘Big Three’; Chrysler, General Motors and Ford are all competing to produce alternative fuel vehicles and making a big noise about their efforts. The Chevrolet Volt is a ‘plug-in hybrid’ with the ability to travel for 40 miles just on its six-hour electric charge. After the electric charge is depleted a three cylinder, one litre engine sits at constant revs, creating electricity to recharge the batteries. The Volkswagen Space Up! Blue also harnesses a hydrogen fuel-cell, which charges 12 lithium-ion batteries which power an electric motor. Volkswagen claims an impressive 65 miles is possible on just battery power, and 220 miles with a full tank of compressed hydrogen. The Hyundai Genesis Coupe proved arresting, and not just because of its bright orange paintwork. If it goes on sale in concept form it will be the first hardcore sports car from the Korean manufacturer with over 300bhp and rear-wheel drive. Other cars worth your attention include the Audi Cross Cabriolet Quattro, which is expected to form the basis of the Audi Q5. The Jaguar XF very much looks to the future for its design ethos. The 2007 Los Angeles Motor Show runs until the 25th November. |
