You’ll need your provisional license and pass certificate in order to collect your driving license

11 October 2007

You’ve passed your theory and practical tests. So what's next?

Read our essential guide to claiming your pass and receiving your full driving license.

Contact the DVLA

Get in touch with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) to claim your license. As detailed in our theory and practical test guide, you only need to do this if you didn’t opt to have your license automatically issued by your examiner.

You’ll need your provisional license and pass certificate in order to collect your driving license. It’s free, and you have two years from the date of your practical exam to do this – any longer and you’ll have to take the theory and practical tests again.

What you need to do

1. Sign the test pass certificate declaration.
2. Make sure you have your photocard provisional license, the D740 paper counterpart and your final test pass certificate.
3. Post them to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BJ.

What happens next?

The DVLA should return your final driving license within three weeks of receiving your pass certificate and provisional license. This may take longer if they need to check up on any recent changes to your personal details or medical history.

FAQs

Can I drive before I receive my license?
Yes, under these conditions:
• The DVLA has received your application
• You’ve held a licence issued since January 1, 1976
• You have no driving disqualifications
• You haven’t been refused a licence for medical reasons

Can I apply for my driving license online?
No. Currently, the only way to receive your full license is to post the forms to the DVLA.

What if my examiner issued my driving license automatically?
If this is the case, you don’t have to send off your provisional license and test pass certificate. You should receive your license within three weeks.

What happens if my name has changed since I applied for my provisional license?
You need to fill in a D1 form from the Post Office and provide new documents to prove your identity. If you need help filling in a form, pick up an INF1D booklet. These are also available from the Post Office.

What if I passed my driving test for a motorcycle or other vehicle?
The same as a car license applies. Just send off your provisional license, the D740 paper counterpart and your final test pass certificate. Your vehicle type will be shown on the certificate for the DVLA to see, who will post the correct license to you.

What happens if I don’t notify the DVLA of my pass?
You have a time limit of two years – any longer and you’ll have to retake the theory and practical tests.
