09 October 2007 The all-new M3 was launched in September 2007 and continued BMW’s tradition of installing a powerful, high-revving engine into the humble 3-Series – with spectacular results. And for the first time in ten years, the M Division has churned out a four-door variant of one of the most famous badges in motorsport history – the M3 saloon. With its new compact 4-litre V8 engine, the German carmaker has achieved an impressive feat – not only is the new engine lighter than its smaller 3.2-litre predecessor, but it churns out a massive 400bhp. This propels the M3 saloon from 0-62mph (100kph) in just 4.9 seconds and on to a limited top speed of 155mph – performance figures mirroring its fiercest rival, the Audi RS4. With a 414bhp V8 engine, the four-wheel drive Audi RS4 has leapt off the starting line and given what many enthusiasts believe as the first real challenge to the mighty M3 – a formidable achievement. But this isn’t the first four-door BMW to house a massive engine – sitting in the Inside the controversially-styled executive saloon sits a monstrous F1-inspired 5-litre V10 engine – launching the near 2-tonne heavyweight from 0-62mph (100kph) in under five seconds.
