02 October 2007 by Andy Goodwin We’ve all watched the weekly balletic performance as the Stig – Top Gear’s tame racing driver – wrestles the week’s starring car round the Top Gear track as fast as it can possibly go. The machines found at the top of the Power Board are an eclectic bunch. All the big names are there, Ferrari, Porsche, Maserati, Lamborghini of course but, some big surprises too. The overall victor with a lap of 1:17.6 is the Koenigsegg CCX. In sixth place is the plucky Brit, the insect-like Ariel Atom. The car so fast it could actually be seen contorting Clarkson’s face. The track was specially designed for Top Gear by Lotus and has slow corners to test grip, fast ones to show stability and dramatic chicanes which let the Stig show us how a car performs at its limit. It was originally planned to make the track wet for every test, giving a level playing field to every car. According to Richard Hammond this was a good idea, but in reality led to a dry track covered in puddles. Now watch our slideshow of the fastest cars around the Top Gear Track, from 10th to 1st place with some surprises along the way.
