Frankfurt motor show: crazy concepts

Frankfurt motor show: crazy concepts - Subaru WRC Concept

06 September 2007

As well as a fistful of new cars, the Frankfurt motor show will unearth some concept car gems – from a sexy convertible Citroen to a bonkers Peugeot coupe.

Stuart Milne has rounded up the concept stars which will pull the crowds at next week's show.

Subaru

It’s a new model blitz at Frankfurt for Subaru, but the crowds are sure to be drawn by its World Rally Car Concept. It will be unveiled by WRC charger, Petter Solberg and is an indication of future styling trends for the next world rally car.

Citroen C5 AirscapeCitroen

No motor show would be complete without some neat concepts from Citroen. It will haul two cars over the border for the Frankfurt show: the stunning convertible C5 Airscape and crazy C-Cactus.

Citroen has waxed lyrical about the C5 Airscape's concave panels and high waistline – but we don't care about the details. It just looks sensational.

Under the bonnet – as is the trend of the moment – sits a green engine. The UrbanHybrid system allows equipment, such as the air-con and audio system, to be powered by electricity generated under Citroen C-Cactusbraking.

But it's back to the drawing board for the C-Cactus, which looks unlike anything we've seen before. Based on the C4 platform, it has around half the components of the original car and incorporates many recycled components.

And it's capable of 93mph, while still returning 83mpg and emitting just 78g/km of CO2.

Ford

Ford VerveYou're looking at the replacement for the evergreen Fiesta. The Verve concept 'hints' at the company's design direction for its next all-new supermini. But given The Blue Oval's past track record for taking concepts to production models – like the new Mondeo and forthcoming Kuga SUV – expect the new Fiesta to look a lot like this.

The 18-inch alloys pictured are unlikely to make production, apart from on the range-topping models, but we'd expect to see the panoramic glass sunroof and coupe-like stance when it finally launches.

Hyundai i-BlueHyundai

The i-Blue concept Hyundai will debut in Frankfurt is one of its most stylish and environmentally-friendly yet. The sharp, angular lines hide Hyundai's latest fuel cell electric technology which is currently under development in Korea.

i-Blue is a four seat crossover vehicle, complete with LED headlamps, a panoramic windscreen which stretches across the roof and some rear-opening 'suicide' doors.

Kia Schreyer Sports CoupeKia

Kia has spent the last couple of months drip-feeding pictures of its Schreyer Sports Coupe Concept, which will finally see the light of day in Frankfurt.

Designed in Europe by Kia's design boss, Peter Schreyer – alongside the Cee'd and ex_cee'd cabrio concept – the coupe is said to herald a new design direction for the Korean marque.

Details are sketchy, and the final name is still to be announced, but Kia says it is will be spacious enough to seat four.

Mitsubishi Cx ConceptMitsubishi

The Concept-Cx is the car Mitsubishi says will draw a line between its car and SUV ranges. Cx stands for Compact Crossover, and features a host of environmental technologies including eco-friendly plant-based eco-plastics.

Under the bonnet sits Mitsubishi's next-generation 1.8-litre 'Clean Diesel' engine, mated to an automated manual gearbox, and is a preview of powertrains slated for a 2009 launch.

Nissan MiximNissan

The centrepiece of Nissan's stand will be the Mixim concept – a car designed for the PlayStation generation. The driver sits centrally, with two seats either side – like a McLaren F1 supercar.

It features all-wheel drive technology, with Nissan's 'Super Motor' electric motor/generator and uses the latest lithium-ion batteries. Although a concept, the technology is a nod towards the green direction Nissan is heading.

The styling has been inspired by a crash helmet, and is slightly shorter and wider than the existing Micra

Peugeot 308 RC ZPeugeot

The Audi TT-like 308 RC Z is a stylish coupe, using the 1.6-litre turbocharged engine from the 207 GTi and an all-new six-speed manual gearbox. Although Peugeot says it's a project to showcase new concepts, technology and styling ideas; it would be mad not to put it into production.

Although not as crazy-looking as the RC Z, Peugeot's other pair of concepts are important glimpses into future real-world versions of the cars. The 308 Hybride emits just 90g/km of CO2 – making it tax exempt by today's standards – and reduces fuel consumption by a massive 58 per cent over a standard 308 HDi.

Peugeot's 308 SW Prologue concept is the first look at the sport wagon version of the 308 hatchback. The Prologue seats seven, features a panoramic glass roof and a split-opening rear tailgate.

Suzuki KizashiSuzuki

Suzuki's Concept Kizashi – a Japanese word meaning prelude or foretaste – is a mid-range model which will sit above the Swift in the car maker's range. Suzuki's press release is full of hints the company will use this as a platform to launch a bigger car, which will be seen for the first time at the show.
