Six of the best: hot hatches

Six of the best: hot hatches - News image

20 June 2007

British car buyers can't get enough of hot hatches. We buy more than anywhere else in Europe thanks to a blend of performance and practicality.

Stuart Milne has rounded up six of the very best new hot hatches available at a showroom near you.

Volkswagen Golf GTi

The Golf GTi was the car that kick started the hot hatch phenomenon. And three decades later, it's still setting the world on fire. The latest generation looks incredible and is nothing short of sensational to drive. In fact, we struggled to find a better way to spend £20,000 on a car.

Ford Focus ST

With its rorty 2.5-litre, five cylinder engine and thuggish styling, there's a lot to praise the Focus ST for. It’s a cracker on winding roads, with direct steering, minimal body roll and huge reserves of pulling power. And if you shop around, brand new STs are available for around £15,000, which makes it tremendous value for money.

Mazda 3 MPS

The Mazda 3 MPS is the hottest of all the current hot hatches – it can hit 62mph from rest in 6.1 seconds and on to an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph. That means it rubs shoulders with the BMW M5, various AMG-tuned Mercedes and the Audi RS4. And despite channelling a massive 256bhp through its front wheels, it displays excellent road manners.

Mini Cooper

After almost fifty years, the Mini is still a great British success story. It might be German-owned today, but it's still built in Oxford – and the factory can't build 'em quick enough. And the secret? It remains a hoot to drive, lovely to look at and nowadays it's big enough to take the family too.

Seat Leon Cupra

The Leon Cupra can be thought of as a Golf GTi +1. It's quicker (6.2 seconds to 62mph against 7.2 for the VW) and ever so slightly more hardcore. That's because the same basic 2-litre turbocharged engine has been tweaked to bear more of a similarity with the far more expensive Audi A3. It looks fantastic too, especially in its trademark canary yellow paint.

Toyota Yaris SR

The Yaris SR might be best described as a lukewarm hatch, but those seeking low running costs and discreet looks will certainly find something to love here. The whole Yaris range is remarkably easy to live with – and safe, too with a full five star EuroNCAP crash test rating.
