Six of the best: Convertibles
01 June 2007
Stuart Milne brings you six of the best drop-tops for fun in the sun.
Ford Focus Coupe Convertible The Focus CC is the latest practical hatchback to be chopped into a convertible, and it's certainly one of the best looking. Styled by Pininfarina who's also responsible for the Ferrari 599 and various Alfa Romeos it doesn't have the bulbous boot required by most folding hard-tops to store the roof. It's good on the road too, with a choice of 2-litre petrol or diesel engines. Auto Driven: Ford Focus Coupe Convertible
Mazda MX-5 The MX-5 is one of the few cars to leave every driver smitten. It looks great and if you get the 2-litre version, pretty fast too. But its real trump card is the way it drives its handling is sensational, and will embarrass cars costing five times as much. The Roadster Coupe is the one to go for its clever folding hardtop means it's quieter than the soft-top and only weighs a little more, meaning its excellent driving poise is retained. Mitsubishi Colt CZC The Colt is an interesting alternative to the Mini convertible and Vauxhall Tigra largely because its a rare sight on the roads. We loved the fizzy 1.5-litre turbocharged model, with its swift performance and cheeky looks. And it's packed with nice touches like the spoiler-shaped bootlid brake light and funky interior trim. Saab 9-3 Convertible Big can be beautiful, as the 9-3 Convertible shows. It's one of the few cars on the roads which look as good with the roof up as it does with it folded. That's got a lot to do with Saab's attention to detail like the colour-coded panel which runs from the door tops, right across the panel which covers the roof. We drove the turbocharged 2.8-litre V6 Aero, so some impressive performance was guaranteed. Auto Trader Ten Point Test: Saab 9-3 Convertible
Vauxhall Astra TwinTop Another coupe-convertible to turn into something sexy from an ordinary hatchback. The TwinTop looks very similar to the Focus CC and arguably better from the rear but there are more engines available and the option of the gorgeous saddle brown leather interior fitted to our test car. Volkswagen Eos It might look part Golf, part Passat, but the Eos is the most stylish albeit understated model in Volkswagen's current range. More engines are available than the Astra and Focus, including the lusty 3.2-litre V6 from the Golf R32. It's certainly the coupe-convertible for the shrinking violets among us.
