Geneva Motor Show – the latest

Geneva Motor Show – the latest - Geneva Motor Show - the latest

05 March 2007

Last week we brought you the lowdown on the runners and riders at the Geneva Motor Show.

But the exhibitors are a canny bunch, so Stuart Milne looks at the latest announcements from one of Europe's leading motor shows.

BMW
Need to get a load of luggage somewhere quickly? Thought so; and so did BMW who will launch the M5 Touring estate at Geneva.

It still has the same 507bhp V10 engine, giving a sub-five second 0-60mph time and a maximum speed of more than 200mph (if you tear out the limiter).

The M5 Touring will launch later this month, and expect a hefty price tag of almost £70,000.

Hyundai i30Hyundai
Hyundai has been cagy about its launch in Geneva, saying it will launch a Ford Focus-size concept car. But we can reveal the Korean marque will unveil the finished product – the i30.

Perhaps the company's most significant car to date, the i30 – which has been designed specifically for European tastes - will come with a choice of petrol and three diesel engines and boasts one of the longest wheelbases in its class.

It will also present a concept crossover vehicle, codenamed HED 4. The car is the result of a joint project with GE Plastics to create a shape impossible using conventional metal and glass.

Lotus 2-elevenLotus
There will be some for whom an Elise or Exige isn't hardcore enough, so Lotus has developed a track masterblaster called the 2-Eleven, and it'll make its world debut at Geneva.

The £40,000 semi race car produces 252bhp and weighs just 670kg, giving a power-to-weight ratio comparable with a 1960s Formula One car – and its fully road legal.

For those looking for ultimates, there will also be a track-only version priced at £50,000 with an aerodynamic pack and a race-approved seat.

Jaguar XJJaguar
Jaguar will launch a dramatic new look for the the XJ saloon at Geneva. The 2007 model will receive huge new front and rear bumpers and a host of other cosmetic revisions.

But most importantly, the Jag is rumoured to feature the engines which will go on to grace the forthcoming XF, including an M5-rivalling 500bhp 5-litre V8 for the hot R-badged models.

Mini Cooper S hot hatchMini
Mini won't be launching a car as such, rather a hot tuning pack for the Cooper S hot hatch.

The JCW (John Cooper Works) Tuning Kit hikes the S's grunt to a whacking 192bhp, with 184lb/ft of pulling power thanks to a remapped engine computer and a new exhaust system.

But the pack won't come cheap; you'll need more than £1,000, and even more if you want to pick through the new list of JCW styling accessories.

RenaultRenault
Renault will be unveiling a range of new models at this year’s show, including the production version of the new Twingo supermini, which is coming in right hand drive for the first time.

The French car maker will show its new Scenic Conquest for the first time to Geneva. The rugged-looking 4x4-alike has "an increased level of on-road ability without the weight penalty, fuel economy reduction and CO2 emission increase associated with SUVs", according to Renault.

Renault will also be taking some concepts to the show, but is remaining tight-lipped on any further information.

Saab BioPowerSaab
There's yet more biofuel news from Saab, after it announced it will make is ethanol-fuelled BioPower technology available in all its models.

The Swedish car maker will be launching is new 1.8t BioPower engine in Geneva, and will fit it in its 9-3 range, making Saab unique in offering bio-ethanol engines in all its models.

Skoda FabiaSkoda
Taking styling cues from its Roomster mini-MPV, Skoda will bring its Fabia supermini bang up to date at Geneva.

At its world premiere, Skoda will boast the Fabia has a choice of seven engines, generous cabin and luggage space and reduced CO2 emissions.

Skoda will also unveil its new S2000 concept, which is likely to form the Czech marque's latest foray into motorsport – and could sire a hot hatch for the road.

Come back tomorrow for our live reports from the show.
