Jeremy Clarkson's garage has featured some of the sexiest cars on the road. But what's his runaround?
Adrian Hearn looks at the stars’ unlikely cars – some of which cost less than £9,000.
Jeremy Clarkson: Ford Focus For a man who spends 75 per cent of his life shouting power and the remaining 25 per cent powersliding, it’s surprising to hear the world’s most controversial car hack owns a 1.6-litre Ford Focus.
The Top Gear presenter said: “It’s our station car, our tool. It’s what we leave in unlit railway car parks for a week and give to the nanny when she’s going clubbing. And after four years I can tell you two things. I still find it enormous fun to drive, and it has never gone wrong.”
Duncan Ferguson: Ford Escort Van Everton legend Ferguson was earning big bucks at Goodison, but he opted to drive to training in his Escort van. Big Dunc’s van helped transport his pigeons for racing and took pride of place alongside the Aston Martins and Ferraris at the training ground.
James May: Fiat Panda Top Gear’s Captain Slow has a penchant for classic, quintessential ‘Great British’ cars such as Rolls Royces and Jaguars. He also drives a Fiat Panda. The 1.2-litre model produces 60bhp and has a top speed of 90mph.
Jimmy Carr: Rover 75 British Comedy Award winner Carr was once the fastest ‘Star in a Reasonably Priced Car’ on Top Gear. But the comedian blew his cool by revealing his car to be a Rover 75. The comic told Jeremy Clarkson: “The first one blew up so I went back to the dealer and asked him to sell me another.”
Pete Doherty: Jaguars How to be a rock star: Number one album? Tick. Supermodel girlfriend? Tick. Drug problems? Tick. A garage of supercars? No. Controversial musician Pete Doherty loves used Jaguars and has had over eight in the last year.
Chris Eubank: Peterbilt 379 Truck The monocle-sporting boxer is something of an eccentric. An eccentric who drives a Peterbilt 379 Truck. Eubank’s seven-ton, 32ft truck set him back £54,000 and cost £22,000 to be delivered to the UK.
Djibril Cisse: Chrysler 300C The French star loves bling – as demonstrated by his Chrysler. The striker’s Yank tank has a bizarre paintjob, with an even crazier motif sprayed on the bonnet. Couple the design with the wacky wheels and backwards-opening suicide doors and you have one of the most unsubtle cars on the road.
Jay Leno: Tank Car US chat show host Leno loves cars. His £30 million collection includes over 80 cars and 70 bikes. Sitting next to his Bugatti Veyron, McLaren F1 and Porsche Carrera GT is his ‘Tank Car.’ A five-ton monster with a 30-litre engine. Only trouble is, the engine’s so big there’s hardly any room to sit in the 28-foot car.
