High speed Shakespeare - Dockside Story

20 July 2006

Vauxhall’s version of Romeo & Juliet is one of the more unusual Motor Show highlights

But is it four-wheeled fun or theatrical travesty? Keith Collantine dons his opera glasses.

“Dockside Story” they call it. “A theatrical circus of stunts, performed by cars and choreographed to the story of Romeo and Juliet.”

To be honest, watching the Bard’s timeless tragedy performed by Astras and Merivas was not top of my Motor Show must-sees.

The Shakespeare fan in me may wince at the thought but my petrolhead heart is wooed by the squealing of punished of tyres and the unmistakable whiff of searing rubber.

The show boasts a selection of Vauxhalls hottest VXR cars from the thundering Monaro to the oddball Zafira screaming across the stage. ‘Juliet’ is perched atop a JCB and there’s a motor bike stunt team jumping over a rock band.

And that’s just the first act.

It’s loud, brash and on occasion completely obscured by tyre smoke. There’s tons crammed into a half-hour show and the audience’s attention is constantly split between different sights and stunts.

Shakepeare buffs might be surprised by a few changes to the script. I can’t remember the scene where Romeo is fired from a cannon, nor when a giant skeleton Shakespeare lumbers across the stage. But kudos to the director for these bold additions to the tale.

“Dockside Story” in the Motor Theatre is definitely worth a look. If you’ve been pounding around the show all day and had a go on all the ‘rides’, take the weight off your feet for a while and be entertained. Do take a bottle of water if it’s hot, though.

It’s not high art: the Royal Shakespeare Company has nothing to fear. But it is a blast.
