Ford: fresh, fast and funky
24 October 2002
Perhaps the most significant car on Ford?s stand was tucked away behind a wall. The Focus FCV Hybrid is currently the most advanced fuel cell powered vehicle in the world. The FCV (Fuel Cell Vehicle) employs a fuel cell and a 216-volt battery unit to power the Focus to a limited top speed of 80mph.
Unlike other alternative fuelled vehicles, the FCV looks like a normal car and combines decent performance with a good range of 160-200 miles. Although the FCV is still in relative infancy, it shouldn?t be too long before fuel cell cars will be a common sight on the road.
That?s all well and good if you?re on a mission to find the most eco-friendly cars in the world, but for the performance-loving petrolhead, there was the awesome RallyeConcept Fiesta.
Packing a 200bhp thump from its 1.6-litre turbo?d engine, the RallyeConcept is not for the faint of heart. This hot Fiesta even looks fast when stationary, with its huge flared wheel arches housing monster 18in alloys, massive vents in the bumpers and bonnet which all play a part in its tarmac-hugging stance.
Inside, the interior is pure competition car, with a full roll cage, plumbed-in fire extinguisher, Sparco bucket seats and race harnesses. The RallyeConcept signals Ford?s desire to make a real impact in the ultra-competitive Super 1600 rally class.
Ford has lacked a fast Fiesta since the demise of the RS Turbo, nearly 10 years ago, and with the 206 GTi and Clio 172 taking sales from the blue oval, they need a hot hatch badly.
For those who prefer style over power, Ford brought the latest incarnation of their funky StreetKa to the show. It?s done the rounds for a few years now, but the latest look is widely expected to be the final version. It will be powered by a 1.6-litre 94bhp engine, which should make use of the Ka?s tidy handling when it goes on sale in April.
