Gary Mason wins again

29 May 2009
News image Gary Mason has continued his fantastic start to superbike season, scoring his third successive double first in the 2009 Mirror.co.uk Cup at Donington Park.

Before the race, the Quay Garage Honda Fireblade rider said: "Im looking forward to Donington Park with it being my local track, great circuit to ride and Ive had some good results there in the past.”

Things started positively, as he qualified five places ahead of the nearest Cup rider, (Peter Hickman on the Ultimate Racing Yamaha), 13th overall on the Superbike grid.

Race One was interrupted on the sighting lap, when HM Plant Hondas Josh Brookes collided with Sylvain Guintoli on the Worx Suzuki, leaving the Frenchman with a broken right fibular and tibia.

Once the race got underway, Gray Mason worked his way up to eighth but in a fiercely fought contest, the Quay Garage racer eventually slipped back to 12th.

Still the first of Cup riders across the line, he was followed by Tom Tunstall in 14th and Martin Jessopp in 15th, both on Hondas.

Race Two was red-flagged after Karl Harris crashed out when the engine on his Hydrex Honda blew oil. Gary Mason set the fastest lap of the Cup riders and this time his efforts were rewarded with a seventh place finish, six places ahead of the following Cup racer, Peter Hickman on the Ultimate Yamaha.

Gary currently leads the Mirror.co.uk Cup by 38 points and is 8th in the ViSK BSB Championship standings, just three points behind Chris Walker. BSB moves to Thruxton this weekend for Round Four.
