Scooter sales surge
|
19 March 2008 | |
Sales of cheap new scooters have increased dramatically during the first two months of 2008 and look set to rise further as fuel prices and car tax escalate following the Budget. Statistics released by the Motor Cycle Industry Association show that the budget-priced Peugeot V-Clic is the best selling 50cc scooter this year and 30% of the Top Ten motorcycles registered in 2008 are sub-£1,000 50cc scooters. Last year the figure was 20%. With petrol currently selling at nearly £1.10 per litre and motorists facing tax increases of around five pence per litre in just six months time, a scooter like the Peugeot V-Clic that is capable of returning 80mpg makes financial sense. But it’s not just low prices that are attracting motorists onto two wheels. Recent research reveals that one in six Brits spends the equivalent of an entire working day travelling to and from work in the course of a week, while competition for limited parking spaces and charges for these add to the misery and stress routinely endured by drivers. You can usually park a scooter for free, avoid congestion charges and beat traffic jams. And you can buy a new Peugeot V-Clic for just £899 on the road. That’s almost as cheap as taking he bus.
