Boris Johnson backs bikes in bus lanes

News image Boris Johnson, the Tory candidate for Mayor of London, is backing calls to allow bikers to use of bus lanes.

In announcing his scheme to allow motorcyclists to use bus lanes in London if he becomes Mayor, Boris says: “Allowing motorcycles into bus lanes would ease congestion and increase traffic speed. TfL blatantly suppressed evidence that shows it is safer for motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians.

“Indeed, some of the experiments showed that collisions were reduced by nearly a half. I want to encourage people to get out of their cars and use other forms of transport but we must make it easier for them to do so. I want to get London moving and this is one of a raft of initiatives that I will take.”

At today’s announcement, attended by British Motorcycle Federation chairman Anna Zee and BMF government relations executive Chris Hodder, Zee said: “We welcome the first of the mayoral candidates to see sense and allow motorcycles to use bus lanes. The TfL report that Boris refers to shows that motorcycle accidents were nearly halved during a three year trail period and despite scare stories to the contrary, it proved safer for all users, pedestrians, cyclists, and car drivers too.”

The BMF now hope that this will increase pressure on Ken Livingstone to publish the much delayed TfL report, leaked copies of which prove beyond doubt the benefits of bus lane use by motorcyclists.
