The Auto Trader expert verdict:

4

Superior styling meets twin-axle stability in an iconic design that is recognised around the world. The Airstream Colorado has the looks that builds excitement on any pitch, backed by its semi-monocoque construction so you’re never short of panache or peace of mind. Perfect.

Reasons to buy:

  • tickThere’s nothing else like an Airstream.
  • tickTwin-axle stability and construction peace of mind.
  • tickLuxury living space flooded with natural light.

At a glance:

Design

Whether you think it’s a Marmite ‘love it / hate it’ look or not, the design is flawless. If it’s not for you, that’s one thing, but there’s no denying how many heads are going to turn on the road and the pitch. On average, 350 hours of Ohio handcrafting go into the 1200 square feet of treated aluminium – or perhaps we should say aluminum – using 3000 rivets; with the fresh water, grey water and black water tanks built into the frame. It’s a beaut of engineering, inside and out.

Living

The interior styling is second to none, with no beige cabinetry or light wood grain laminates to be found. Not only is the U-shaped sofa is comfortable, there are upholstery options aplenty, meaning that Airstream living is kind to both body and aesthetic needs. Plus, the exterior ZipDee awning means you’ve got plenty of outdoor living space in the summer months, even if the weather does take a turn. And when the temperature drops, it’s still handy to shelter and store any muddy boots before entering your warm tourer.

Dining

When not in bed-mode, the fully-adjustable telescopic table pops up for convenience, but it’s in the kitchen where the Colorado stands out. Bring the heat with a Dometic three-burner hob, oven and grill, and chill out with the Dometic 190-litre fridge or 35-litre freezer compartment (even better than the Missouri’s 110-litre fridge and 12-litre freezer). The kitchen workshop offers plenty of prep space, with deep draining grooves for easy cleaning into the stainless-steel Franke sink. As in the rest of the living space, there are windows everywhere, meaning that daytime dining is easy to pull together, and the hand-crafted Italian cabinetry offers plenty of space for storage.

Sleeping

Sleeping four, the Colorado features a front double bed made up from the lounge seating and measuring in at 2.19m by 1.37m, with a rear double – a fixed transverse – sized 1.85m by 1.41m. In the comfort stakes you can expect a Duvalay Duvalite mattress with all the benefits of memory fibre tech, but the biggest benefit is the natural light that surrounds you from two caravan walls, meaning that it’s the main bedroom is the perfect space to kick back and relax during the day, too.

Washroom

Separating the sleeping space and the kitchen, opposite a good-sized wardrobe, the Colorado’s frosted-window washroom comes complete with a centrally heated stainless-steel radiator, for cosy cleaning courtesy Alde excellence. There’s nothing special here in terms of trick storage touches, but the worktop space and cabinetry below offer simply practicality that will make your morning and bedtime routines a breeze.

Value for money

On the fence about value, here. At £91,995, nobody’s pretending that this Airstream isn’t a phenomenal spend. That said, if you’re after the silver bullet styling and incredible living space contained within, you know what you’re getting for your money. If the Colorado is above your budget, the single-axle four-berth Missouri could be yours for £13,500 less. Whichever model you choose, you can be safe in the knowledge that the construction is second to none and the bodyshell has been hurricane-force tested with more than 10,000 gallons of pressurised water before the furniture’s even been installed. It should see you good for a few years or touring to Cromer and it’ll hold its value for when you do fancy a model or manufacturer change.

Why buy?

Again, price is a huge determining factor here, but if you’ve got the money and the layout works for you, it’s a no brainer. There’s nothing like an Airstream when it comes to touring that’s anything but boring. Colorado caravanning will bring you a new level of experience on-site and on the road. Enjoy it! Available from the sole official UK dealership, Lowdhams.
