Writing an accurate description of what you’re selling is essential when selling your plant machinery privately. You could risk getting into legal trouble if you don’t do this properly or if it’s different to how it’s described in your ad - so remember to include all relevant details about your machinery.
Here on Auto Trader, the good news is that our easy-to-use forms show you exactly which information to include in your ad. Useful information to have handy before starting to fill out your ad includes:
  • Make
  • Model
  • Manufacturer year
  • Engine power (if applicable)
  • Hours in operation
  • Derivative (if applicable)
Additional useful vehicle information includes operating height and width or weight and warranties or any attractive, optional features it may have, such as interior and exterior condition of the equipment, charging station details or air conditioning.
The number of owners the equipment has had and perhaps even why you’re thinking of selling can also be of interest to buyers. You will fill this in to be included in your ad during the “create your advert” process. Remember that it’s against the law to mis-describe what you’re selling so it’s necessary to be as accurate as you can be. It’s important to note that this also includes what you say to the buyer, and that you’ve included any defects you know of - there’s a buyer for everything so be honest about the condition. This won’t necessarily be a disadvantage for you. To appeal to potential buyers it’s vital that you’re concise. Try to stick to between 50 and 75 words - this is the ideal length for an online advert in our experience. In summary, be clear and avoid using block capitals as these make the advert more difficult to read. Don’t use clichés (such as ‘lovely owner’ and ‘first to see will buy’) because these terms that won’t mean very much to buyers.
Top tips:
  • Mention anything that makes your machinery special
  • Be honest, concise and accurate
  • Avoid clichés, vague terms and block capitals
