E-bikes are becoming increasingly popular. People are using them for all sorts like doing their weekly shops, going to the tube, or even as an activity when hanging out with friends. Their ease of use and convenient storage have made them a practical choice for commuting for many Brits.

What is an e-bike?

E-bikes are bicycles with a pedal-powered battery "assist". On a pedal-assist e-bike, a little motor activates when you press the pedals, giving you a boost so you can glide over challenging terrain and climb hills without using too much energy. A lot of people say e-bikes feel exactly like traditional push bikes—but better. Read more about what counts as an EAPC here.

How do you operate an e-bike?

Like a traditional bike, you can control your speed with your feet. You simply feel more powerful and can move quickly.

Are e-bikes legal in the UK?

Yes, e-bikes are legal in the UK. As long as you are 14 years and the e-bike meets EPAC requirements, you can ride an e-bike in the UK.
You do not need a licence to ride one and it does not need to be registered, taxed or insured. Read more about e-bike legalities here.

The Brompton Electric C Line comes with a detachable battery. As you’d expect from Brompton’s incredible design team, this isn’t just any battery. It comes in a carry case and clicks on and off in front of the handlebars.
