The Auto Trader verdict:

2.6/5
The MG3 has individuality, practicality, price and agility on its side, plus it comes with plenty of safety kit. However, the poor ride and refinement count against, as does the cheap-feeling interior. Not bad, but we’d look elsewhere.

A really good small hatchback, offering excellent value.

MG MG3

An excellent small hatchback. One small reliability issue, dealt with promptly under warranty. Not the sportiest performer unless you're prepared to work the gearbox hard, but handles really well. Fuel economy only average, but insurance costs help to offset this. Really good value for a very reasonable price, with plenty of equipment as standard. Take a test drive - you'll be pleasantly surprised!

Nice looking car but

MG MG3

My MG3 looks really good and the handling is great. However the engine is an absolute dog it does not accelerate smoothly and all the power is way up the rev range. Also compared to other similar cars with the exception of the Dacia Sandero it has poor mpg mine is only averaging 34 miles per gallon. All this I could live with if the car was reliable but it has been plagued with electrical and transmission problems all the five months I have had it from new.

Let down

MG MG3

FrenchAndy | 27th April '16

Timing chain went on my vehicle after 20 months massive bill not covered under the warranty as my mileage in the FIRST year exceeded the manufacturers schedule by just 3000.It was dealership serviced but MG still refused to pay.Still 14 months of a now worthless warranty still to run!

M.P.G fairly sparse at 37 MPG according to on board computer.

Although style does look good and car is fairly roomy just not robust enough for my liking.

A gem of a car. Responsive, easy to drive with striking good looks.

MG MG3

The car initially caught our eye as something a little different. It is stylish. I found it surprisingly responsive. For the class acceleration is good. All the controls are visible and accessible It has cruise control something unusual in cars of this size. Daylight LED lights. Bluetooth connectivity was easy to set up so music could be streamed and mobile phone used hands free.

Gear change was intuitive and positive.

For media there are USB and and a 3.5 mm jack connection in addition to Bluetooth. Our car has smart leather seats.

Very good value for this revitalised iconic marque.

Brilliant

MG MG3

I bought this car for my wife, and we have found it to be an excellent choice. It looks and drives superbly. Fuel consumption is very good.

We have loved this car so much, that my wife purchased me an MG6, which also fantastic.

I cant recommend these cars enough, and feel you get a lot of car for your money.

The garages at Telford and Stoke are very good and knowledgeable of there product.

Have to give one star as it breaks so much

MG MG3

LukeA | 6th November '15

I bought this car as a brand new car, direct from an MG dealer.

I've owned it 8 months, and its spent a very large amount of time in the garage (its there now), because they can't seem to fix this issue of the engine cutting out randomly - a major safety issue - even after being returned to manufacturer. I've had to give it 1 star for everything - because how can I rate it higher when I can barely use it?

I've also had terrible customer service throughout all the problems. I would recommend sticking to larger companies that can deal with problems effectively.

non expert review of 2 week old MG3

MG MG3

russell1 | 12th November '13

As title says I have the car for 2 weeks now and absolutely love it. My last car was an Hyundai Coupe and it went through petrol like a drunk goes through ale. I like watching motor sport on TV and had noted a MG6 but never seen one on the road so in curiousity I began a search and came across the MG3. I was immediately taken by its looks, without stickers, and asked my wife if we could go and have a look at one up close. I found Michael Edwards in Wigan and 4 weeks ago on a Saturday we went to have a look. Up close I found it even more appealing and after a quick chat with her that will be obeyed, decided that we would get one. I wanted the black one but she liked the Cherry one in the showroom, we went for the Cherry one? It was ready for delivery so we filled in all the paperwork we could and over the next week Emailed all other relevant documents. A week later I was driving away in a brand new, rare on the road, MG3. 2 weeks later and I have no doubt I made a good decision. Economy is well within the boundaries of acceptability, the handling is positive and sure, noise is not a problem, even at 80 on the motorway.

All dials and switches are within easier reach and feel solid, I like to drive with the steering wheel low so the adjustment was perfect. Grandson is now no problem with the rear doors, no longer have to be a contortionist. Buggy no problem even though it wont go in the boot without lowering the split rear. Gear change is smooth and braking is excellent, acceleration is perfectly reasonable, as at almost 60 I am in no rush to go anywhere, especially an early grave, by tearing around.

Lots of admiring glances and comments, mainly that everyone thought MG was dead and buried. Obviously not I say, designed and assembled at Longbridge, just like the old days but better.

Do yourself a favour and take a look, have a drive, do not listen to the so-called expert. But dont do it too soon as I am enjoying being the owner of a fairly rare breed at the moment.
