Text Message Scams

Find out what you should do if you receive a text message asking you to phone a premium rate number

Customers should be aware of a scam which could affect sellers who include their mobile phone number in their advert.

Sellers have received text messages on their mobile phones from someone posing as a potential buyer. The text message states that they are interested in the vehicle but cannot phone the seller because they are in a bad reception area. The message goes on to ask the seller to ring the buyer back on a premium rate phone number.

Premium rate numbers typically begin with the digits ‘090’ or ‘091’ followed by a further 8 digits. The cost of these calls varies and calls from mobile phones are likely to cost more than calls from landlines.

Most landline numbers in the UK begin with an ‘01’ or ‘02’ and all mobile phone numbers in the UK currently begin with ‘077’ ‘078’ or ‘079.’

PhonepayPlus regulates the content and promotion of premium rate services in the UK. It investigates complaints, has the power to fine companies and can bar access to services.

If you receive a text message asking you to phone a premium rate number, contact the free PhonepayPlus helpline on 0800 500212. Alternatively, you can make a complaint to PhoneplayPlus or check a premium rate number on your phone bill.
