Merc hope to announce new driver before Xmas

Wednesday 25th November 2009

Looks like we could be in for another few weeks of Michael Schumacher/Nick Heidfeld/Robert Kubica to Mercedes GP rumours.

The Brackley-based outfit earlier this week confirmed Nico Rosberg as one of their drivers for the 2010 season, but the other seat remains vacant following the departures of both Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello.

A whole host of drivers, including Schumacher, have been linked with Merc GP and it looks like the speculation will continue for the time being as the team are in no hurry to fill their second race seat.

CEO Nick Fry admits it would be ideal to make an announcement before Christmas, but says there is no pressure on the team to make a rushed decision.

"It obviously would have been ideal to announce them together but that's impossible," he said.

"We don't have huge time pressure at the moment, but once one goes beyond Christmas and into the new year it becomes slightly more difficult with seat fits in time for the engineers to talk to the driver.

"I would hope on the other driver to do it before Christmas purely for logistical reasons."
