While the standard MX-5 packs a traditional soft top roof arrangement, the Roadster Coupe has a folding hard top. This takes just 12 seconds to raise or lower – the fastest roof on sale today. But has breaking with tradition spoilt the greatness of the world's most popular roadster; or given it an extra dimension?

The refreshed Mazda MX-5 roadster and roadster coupe will go on sale in the UK from December 1. The facelifted model gets a modified nose and a more pedestrian-friendly bonnet, whilst some models now come with TomTom satellite navigation. It also now gets side airbags, climate control and a revised chassis.

Mazda has announced a number of subtle alterations to the MX-5 sports car, designed to improve responsiveness, aerodynamic drag and safety. The headline changes include a reworked throttle pedal actuator, that improves the linearity of acceleration, and a revised brake-booster which ‘optimises brake return control’, according to Mazda.

The Mazda MX-5 GT Concept looks set to spice up the range if it gets the green light for production. With a highly tuned 205bhp version of its 2-litre petrol engine it would offer a significant power hike over the 158bhp of the standard model.

Mazda and Alfa Romeo have signed an agreement to share the underpinnings of the next-generation MX-5 roadster. The Mazda and Alfa Romeo models will be distinctly styled inside and out by each manufacturer’s designers, but will share the same light weight and rear-wheel drive philosophy.
