during the last 21 years we are running twoo of this cars. The first 1990 sedan 1.9 d from new and 1996 estate 1.9 TD. Both proved to be excelent in all conditions. We towed a light caravan across Europe few times also we have done a trip arround northern europe. It was always plesure to trawell. Even towing caravan on long distace this car was giving us over 600 miles per tank /70 litres/

Only bad point.....

the clutch pedals is very hard on both cars. Over time we had to replace this cable few times.

Peugeot 405 diesel estate

PEUGEOT 405 1.9 GLXD 5dr (Review date: 29th May '11)

4.5

Owned several of these over the years and I have always found them to be economical and reliable. I managed 200,000 miles in 3 years with one and in that time, apart from consumables, I had to replace 1 headlight bulb and the alternator! These appear to be the last of the 'properly built' Peugeots and seem to have been built to a high standard. Fuel consumption was good with a restrained right foot and handling was ok. I would be in them for 14 hours a day and found them comfortable and a smooth ride. They require a fair amount of maintenance, (6000 mile oil, 2 yearly antifreeze changes are a must) so make sure there is evidence of this. The cambelt is fiddly but simple enough. Keep on top of these and they should last 250,000 miles +.

I would happily recommend a well maintained one to anybody

there's is nothing to be said about this car except its great, a fantastic car that i will be very sad to see go. i go camping a lot and we fit sooo much inside. I have done nearly 50,000 miles in it and not once has it let me down, and as Its a PUG it will go on forever. It will need a good valet but everything else is ok.

Peugeot 405 GLX Turbo Diesel - An excellent family car

PEUGEOT 405 1.9 GLXD Turbo 5dr (Review date: 6th January '11)

When I was in the market for a new car, I wanted an estate.

Diesel was the best option too, to keep costs low

After a long, protracted search, cross referencing every car inside my budget with insurance companies who wish me to pay twice any cars value per day, I stumbled upon the Peugeot 405.

I found that the insurance was vastly cheaper than most others, and that the cars themselves are quite good value, especially given that most come with air conditioning, height adjustable drivers seat, alarm/immobiliser, timed entrance lights, steering colomb mounted radio controls and much more.

The most important thing for me as a driver is cost. I have a family, and so I am poor, but with an average mpg of 45 to 50 and tax is £112 for six months, it is low cost to run.

Parts are cheap, a timing belt costs £35, suspension bush sets are £20 for example.

Servicing costs up to £450 (For a full service, including brake fluid, timing belt change etc). The timing belt, which needs changing every 50,000 miles, is positioned so that the whole engine needs to come out to change it, which is why it is so expensive.

If you keep up basic servicing with this car, it is excellent value to run, as it works out at about £60 per year if you do the easy stuff yourself. These cars are famed for not rusting as well, so they will always look clean.

To drive this car is sublime, the ride is soft but stable, and it doesn't crash in potholes. It leans a little in corners, but the McPherson strut setup gives excellent stability and even sportyness for such a heavy car.

The engine is torquey and powerful even with a full load, and you can soon run out of gears if you aren't careful.

The loadbay is huge and the rear seats fold completely flat. There is little to no road noise or wind noise, but the engine can be clattery at idle.

It looks great, though dated, as styling was by pininfarina.

Allround visibility is fantastic, and the interior is amazingly comfortable, and even though I am 6'3" and there is plenty of headroom, however if you get one with a sunroof, people complain that there is not enough.

Overall, this car is excellent, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who needs a large vehicle.
