Pure luxury without silly running costs
MERCEDES-BENZ E CLASS E220 2dr Auto (Review date: 10th June '11)
I've always dreamt of owning a W124 coupe and a couple of years found my perfect spec car at a reasonable price. I was careful to buy one with a full service history and the retired gent who had owned it for years had obviously taken good care of it.
In my two years of ownership I have taken the mileage from 110k to 121k and it has been completely problem free. This car really does epitomise the saying 'built like a tank', yet it drives a whole lot better! Sure, it's no sports car but you can't beat getting the windows down on a sunny day, wafting along and actually enjoying your drive.
Find a good specialist when it comes to servicing and you won't get ripped off when it comes to maintainance as they'll know exactly what needs doing. I was also suprised at getting a regular 30mpg in mixed driving, and have even managed 34mpg on a long motorway run.
Overall this is one car that has no downsides. It's roomy, superbly built, is gorgeous to drive, doesn't depreciate, doesn't cost a fortune to run, it gets plenty of admiring glances and people think you've paid far more for this classic Merc than you really have. Brilliant to drive and even better to own!

A fantastic cruiser that is a true joy to own and drive

The last of the over engineered hand built Mercedes. Don't expect to find them loaded with gizmo's but they are opulent like a stately home, solid, and more comfortable and any car I have ever owned or been in.
Never failed, never broke and never disappointed.
Not so good in winter as the heaters take a long time to demist windows, and the rear heated window was only partially working on mine.
Slow off the mark, but comes into its own overtaking when it kicks down with the revs high, pulls like a train considering the modest 220 engine and tank like weight. In the wet it is very tail happy and no traction control makes it a wee bit hairy, but in the dry I could not get the back end out of shape at all, just enough understeer to tell you to ease off a bit then grip grip grip. A joy to drive.
Expect to pay about 1K a year to get good servicing done (including tyres etc) which can be about a third of the value of the car, but you will not get 1K a year depreciation, in fact these cars are now going up in value. No one, not even Mercedes make cars like these any more.
I could not recommend this car enough, but dont expect a cheap run around, it is a luxury car of exquisite quality, but as they are now getting old expect a constant drip of maintenance costs that are not inconsiderable. But if you compare a 3K 220 coupé with 1K service pa versus a new E class at £500 per month HP it is a no brainer, get one and enjoy it.
Watch for maintenance costs, wee bits especially running gear cost a fortune to fit, the running gear in these cars is complex and specialist, steering geometry checks can only be done at good indie garages or MB and are required after most jobs I had to do (maybe I was unlucky). The wheel arches are very prone to rust and can be replaced.
Loads of room, it has a boot big enough for 10 bodies!! Also did a 300 mile drive to a festival with 4 aboard and all kit, it was an effortless drive and all the passengers said it was like being chauffeured in luxury.
Once you experience the seatbelt butlers you will always want them.
Can make low 30 MPG but if you buy a E220 coupé you don't worry about the fuel economy now do you!
