Almost very good

Mercedes 140 A Class well worth the money.
MERCEDES-BENZ A CLASS A140 Piccadilly 5dr (Review date: 19th January '12)
Great car for all events - kids, sport, leisure, travel. Easy to insure and run. Bought as second car runaround to Porsche 911 and sold 911 as it didn't get used! Great for transporting kids or moving furniture, lawnmowers etc as rear seats fold down. Great all round view for driver. High driving position so is great for bad back as you step out of car in upright position. Easy to park because you can see where the front and back of car ends. Very nippy and good acceleration. Great in snow due to front wheel drive. Only down side is that front drop links need replaced on a yearly basis but they're not expensive. Great all round car even though they dont look very exciting.
An old, but very smart build small car that can take whole family
MERCEDES-BENZ A CLASS A140 Elegance 5dr (Review date: 19th January '12)
The idea to build this car in late 90's was great. The car is a mirracle of space, taking the fact, that is shorter than fiesta and competitors. It isn't a well build car, the materials inside are pure. 1.4 motor needs to much unleaded, never more than 37 mpg. All in all very specious, great in town, not bed in trips with whole family.
Sporty yet practical
MERCEDES-BENZ A CLASS A190 Elegance 5dr Auto (Review date: 18th January '12)
When I first drove this car after driving a Mercedes Benz Estate, I found it a bit like driving a beach buggy! If you take a corner a bit fast it sometime feels like it might flip over, however I've got used to it now, and really enjoy driving this car.
I have three children under ten years of age and it is is spacious enough for them to be seated comfortably and safely, and also has lot's of legroom. The boot is a good size and will easily take a pushchair and shopping.
It is easy to park as it is quite compact.
Overall I really like this car, it has all the class of a Mercedes yet it's very practical as well.
A Class below
MERCEDES-BENZ A CLASS A160 Classic 5dr (Review date: 16th January '12)
A fantastic car for moving stuff around - clever design with amazing praticality with all seats being able to be removed. Basic A Class 'Classic' has very good spec and seems well built.Low insurance is a delight, cheaper than an Astra to insure.
However, the ride is horrendous, banging crashing and the usual Mercedes 'boat' feeling when you drive. Archaic engines dont do you any favours on fuel economy or emissions and servicing and parts are expensive for what is at the end of the day a 5 door hatchback
A140 Classic - classic mistake!
MERCEDES-BENZ A CLASS A140 Classic SE 5dr Auto (Review date: 25th November '11)
Bought this car for a good price for a cheap town car and run-a-bout....it broke down within a couple of days, very common MB A Class faults - automatic gearbox went into limp home mode with fault symbol displayed on dashboard, would not go faster than 15mph with virtually no acceleration.
The auto gearboxes on these cars are amongst the most unreliable I've seen in a modern car, honestly. A colleague has a 2004 A140 auto, gearbox completely broke down. Before you consider buying one of these, just take a look at numerous forums and websites and they all lead to one conclusion - very unreliable car and expensive to repair, unfortunately I didn't look at these sites before purchasing. Auto gearbox ECU failure (very common) £1,300 to replace, engine ECU/Mass Airflow Sensor failure (also very common) £1,000 to replace. Auto gear selector module failure (very common) £300 to replace. If you don't know what the above items are they are the 'brains' of the car, very poorly made in the A Class and breakdown as early as 30,000 miles. When the auto gearbox ECU fails it can take the gearbox with it! £1,600 at least to replace! Just take a look at a very popular auction website - there are numerous A class MB for sale at very low prices, most with broken autogearboxes.
One leading review website states 'Mercedes should be very worried by this car' and I have to totally agree, they've badly let themselves down with the overall qaulity of this car.
Yes it's quirky looking and has some prestige but don't be fooled, this is not like any other Mercedes, keep well clear, especially fully automatics.
A truely fabulous little town car
MERCEDES-BENZ A CLASS A170 CDI Avantgarde 5dr (Review date: 18th November '11)
Although not owned for very long this is a fabulous little car. I have never owned a car which gives such a high return MPG £10 last for almost 100 Miles. SOOOOO fugal!. Easy to swing into those tight parking spots. Super manouverability. Great load space, as the rear seat move forward to give a little more room in the boot, or come right out to make a van. Great for taking the kids out in. I guess if you had to be picky, this is the SWB model, and so the leg space behind the front seats is limited, but just make sure the back seats have been adjusted back, and there enough room for most growing kids.
Never had any reliabilty issues, and even brake shoes are cheap and easy to change. Servicing costs are lower than most foreign cars.
The drive is great extremely responsive, can be turned on a half penny. due to straight back end, easy to know where you are in the manouvre, no obvious reason to strike what ever might be behind you. As with the front, great positioning to se the road ahead. Happy on a run as well as around the town, the latter making this the ideal car for round town. I'd most certainly recommend this type of car to anyone.
