KIA SPORTAGE 2.0 CRDi XE 5dr (Review date: 23rd January '13)
I have had this car since Jan 2010 when it had 11000 miles. It now has over 83k, and has overall been superb. It is a superb tow car, quick, economical, and meets virtually all of our family needs. The boot though is a bit small, Approx 38 mpg solo, drops to 23 mpg with single axle caravan.
My main gripe is beware the 7 year warranty, and dealer servicing costs. Mine is now at a mileage and age where everything is met with a sharp intake of breath, and "sorry...that is not covered on the warranty". These are famed for the dual mass flywheel packing up, and if you visit a main dealer, be prepared to part with between £1500 and £2000. Given work needed and mileage, I decided to have the cambelt done too, and that put the main dealer bill up to £2700! Local garage did the lot for £1100, and if that invalidates the warranty, I can live with that. Servicing is every 12k, and here on in mine will be done at local garage rather than dealer, saving about £100 a chuck. Cambelt needs doing at 90k, but everyone I know say get it done at 80.
The engine is VW, and virtually indestructible, and excellent. Interior finish is not the best, but equally it is pretty robust and has put up with two kids, German Shepherd and a load of caravanning kit, so maybe not so bad.
Despite spending all that money, I am still thinking of changing it for a newer one, and staying with one of the last of the old shape, so it can't be a bad old bus.
Reliable, comfortable and willing to put on the miles.

The car was bought as a family car that would be expected to put on a lot of miles. I have owned the car aprox 2 yr now and haven't had any trouble.
It is spacious, comfortable and although can swallow the fuel an OK drive. It may not hammer it down the motorway, but hey, the law doesn't allow that and my young child is safe in it.
The boot isn't the biggest, but does allow room for my 2 large dogs. With a roof box and sometimes seats down it allows for a comfortable drive up and down the country for camping and visiting family.
It is used for every day travel and travelling to and from work and hasn't let me down yet. I ove the space that it allows inside and how it makes me feel safe. It doesn't have fancy gagets like built in sat nav, but who cares. Heated seats for the winter and AC for the summer and it very, very comfortable.

I have owned my Sportage from new (08) and have had 2 minor problems, but both sorted under the 7 year manufacturer's warranty!
The car drives really well & has the benefit of great 4x4 capability for when the snow sets in or driving off-road, etc.
I bought this car because of the interior room - my 6ft tall son has plenty of leg-room, even in the back seats.
Fuel economy is good for the size of the vehicle and better than my previous 4x4s (Land Rover, Toyota) but obviously not as good as a standard saloon / hatchback style of car.
Overall, if you're looking for a larger passenger vehicle this is a really good choice & great value for money, you won't go wrong with a Sportage.
Bought in April, sold in October

Bought the 2010 reg (old shape) in April and intended to keep it. Took it into the garage as it stalled while at traffic lights and was holding back in 1st and 2nd gear and very jerky. The mechanic test drove it and said that they are all like that and i would have to put my foot down to drive it.
It was already gobbling diesel at a fast rate so putting my foot down even more was going to use more fuel.
Didnt get on with it. I'm a 5' 4" lady and the seat wasnt comfy. Had to pull it forward nearly to the windscreen just to reach the pedals.
Very disappointed in this vehicle and part ex'd it for a land rover freelander 2. They are like chalk and cheese. Freelander drives without having to put my foot down and drives more like a luxury car than the kia that drove like a knackered van.
More people should buy these!

So, the Kia Sportage - an extremely underestimated car! I recommend looking at these (this shape) if your looking for a good quality reliable family 4x4. Had the sportage 4 years next June and it has been a pleasure to own and drive. One thing I must say though, these dont keep their value, but if youre keeping it for the long run then so what? Absolute dream to drive, handles like a 4x4 should on the road and shouldnt be driven like its a sports car. Very smooth and quiet drive. Engine is smooth and quiet at high speeds due to having the 6 speed gear box. Interior isnt the most amazing but its nice enough to look at and everything WORKS. Only had to go to the garage once since owning for fixes - rear wiper motor had failed but im sure we got it fixed under the absolute piece of mind 7 YEAR WARRANTY! which was the main cause for buying it. Looks lovely exterior wise, very rare on the roads so you do get a few looks. Running costs regarding fuel isnt the cheapest but what do you expect from a 4x4. Will easily achieve 30 mpg from its very responsive quick diesel engine. Very spacious interior and boot. One thing to point out though the ESP is overprotective, kicks in on full throttle as according to kia 'it thinks its going to take off'

Its in fab condition. It is so comfortable and easy to drive. I feel dead posh in it.. I use it for everything transporting teenagers, going shopping. It has such a big boot area. It looks like a 4 wheel drive but is a 3 wheel drive so it is cheaper to insure, uses less fuel and cheaper tax etc It is truly a wonderful car and i dont really want to sell it but am going abroad to live so it will be sadly missed. I love this car.

I have had the car for nearly four years. After buying it I must admit to thinking that it was bit of an impulse purchase however I was proved wrong almost immediately.
This vehicle has turned out to be the most reliable and cost effective car I have ever owned. It drives like a saloon car both in an urban environment as well as on country and motorway roads whilst returning excellent fuel efficiency.
It's 6 speed gear box gives the car the necessary acceleration when required but copes equally well on snow and icy roads.
The only negative for me is the narrow boot. Whilst it is very deep, floor to roof, it is not quite wide enough for my liking. That said it has the easiest folding mechanism of any rear seat assembly that I have ever seen. Once the back seats are folded flat you could accommodate virtually anything in there!!
It is an excellent all round vehicle and I will be sorry to see it go, however it is time to move. I only wish I could afford one of the new ones!!
Best car I have owned

An all round "good egg", This really is a lovely car to drive, spacious, reliable,I cant speak highly enough about my Sportage,
My only gripe is that with my wifes job,she does a lot of stop/starting, I think this is the reason my car is,a little heavy on petrol, at the time of buying it,the diesels were too new and out of my price budjet.
Servicing & maintenence are very reasonable, loads of boot space, which is what we craved for (2 grandkids and all their stuff)
Well done KIA,I would definately buy another Sportage (diesel)
Affordable family car
