Magnificent car
BMW 5 SERIES 520d SE 4dr [177] (Review date: 3rd October '12)

This car has been a dream car for the last four years. It has done all and more that I could ever have dreamed of. To be able to drive the distances needed for work and then to have a great car for family holidays has been perfect and this car has been second to none for the job. Never driven hard, most of the miles are motorway on cruise control, returning 56 mpg. I will miss this car - it is a shame that i have to sell but my next car is a company car so no choice really. The next owner will get a superb car that's reliable, great on fuel, spacious and great to drive.

Over the years I have owned 15 + BMW’s ranging from 3 series, M3’s and 5 series and I have to admit that this one is the most unreliable car I have ever owned. Whilst owning this car for 6 months, 2 parking sensors went and had to be replaced, there was an issue the MAF and the DPF needed replacing. The DPF was the last nail in the coffin, the part alone was £1300 + VAT and Labour. This is actually a common issue on these cars, if not taken on long runs at least every week it’s likely the DPF will need to be replaced at a great cost! Also, there is known issue with the swirl flaps snapping and being thrown into the engine, potentially requiring a new turbo and possibly an engine (well documented issue - just google it!). You can get the swirl flaps removed and replaced with blanking plates, but just can’t believe BMW make cars with these types of issues.
The drive of the car was ok at best, felt a lot older than it actually was and the interior is very plain. I wouldn’t recommend buying this car, unless you do lots of motorway miles and have very deep pockets!

I am so glad i bought this car instead of an A6. This car has everything i would like to have in a decent luxury car. It is spacious, it is fast and if kept in a good condition, its a real head turner. Eventhough i love everything about this car just one thing which i must mention is that its very simple from inside as compared to its rival A6 but than we have iDrive which does literally control all the functions. It was just a matter of time to get used to it. All in all its such an amazing family car yet a boy racer car which handles very well in all sorts of conditions. 10/10 for this car.

had this car for 2 years now and let me tell you that it is by far the best car ive ever driven, and i have driven plenty !!!! this baby can handle the road and when your in it you feel very safe! unlike some cars ( too many to mention ) when the gears slip into the next you hardley feel the switch and you can feel the beast urging you to push it more .. no pressure and no noise ! smooth. mines a diesel and theres no worry about running costs looks are ... well you can see them for yourselves ... sleek front grills sleeks bodyline ... but if your own bodyline is not sleek then forget it ... stick to a skoda !

I Love the Engine torque, Styling and Interior. I handles really well, but it does have a hard ride. The iDrive is really useful. Im Dissapointed in the build quality (my last car was a '99 528i) its not as well built as the older model. The books fuel economy is a lie, I travel 24 miles round trip to work each day and I struggle to get 30mpg out of it, if I run it on the motorway I achieve 36mpg @ 85mph.

BMW 535 D - Is it worth it?

Great car to eat up motorway miles. Can't tell you have 2 turbo's in sequence, just a fluid amount of power throughout the rev range. I use the car every day and have recently noticed consumption is going up. Drawback with this type of car is you have to go to a dealer for a thorough diagnosis. Often have 5 adults in car, no difference in handling or performance. Auto box is very smooth, just one grumble is the way you have wait for engagement when accelerating away from standstill. Interior comfort is very good, level of equipment is high and the iDrive system is very good. I use the voice command function and would be lost without one now. Well worth the extra money over a 520d or 530d especially when sporty driving is required. My car has 19" wheels which adds to the looks and handling. Will be buying another later model of this later in the year.

It is nice, smooth, pleasure to drive, reliable, I am very happy with it.
I switched of from driving Merceedes for over 12 years back to BMW. Following major problems I experienced with merceedes as a car and with dealers.
Although its a big car, but still feels slightly small from me. So i am planning to go for the seven series.
I am happy.

Best car i've ever driven!

I wasn't sure about buying this car as I have 3 children under 5, so need 3 child seats in the back but supriisingly this is not a problem for my 525d, plus i've got 2 pushchairs in the boot and still space for the shopping. I am really ppleased and suprised at the space in these cars. Having never driven an automatic I wasn't sure how I'd find it but these cars are lovely to drive it's so smooth and comfortable on the road. As of yet I don't have a bad thing to say about the car.
