The perfect car?

BMW 5 SERIES 520d SE 4dr Step Auto (Review date: 31st October '11)

5

So this is my second 520d. My first one did 160,000 miles over four years. This one has done 120,000. Neither has had a single problem.

It's big and comfortable and rides so well even with run flat tyres. It has a BIG boot, although I will need a touring version next time. The parking sensors make it SO easy to park.

Performance is what you expect from 163 bhp in a big car. There are bigger engines if you need more poke.

Running costs? 46mpg from an auto, my previous manual version averaged 49mpg, c£200 tax & £600 to insure. Tyres @ £150-200 will last 20-30,000 miles.

If you get a chance to buy one of these take it. You will not be disappointed.

BMW 530D Sport Great Car but expensive.

BMW 5 SERIES 530d Sport 4dr Auto (Review date: 31st October '11)

3.3

I loved this car despite it having 2 turbo failures in 3 years, I was told by the garage that this was probably due to the previous owner not servicing the car properly, mainly changing the oil every year. The second failure they said was due to the oil feeder pipe being blocked by oil sludge. The car had done 70000 miles at the time of the first failure and 82000 at the second. A friend who had a 520 D had the same problem at 90000 miles.

However, the thing I loved most was the driving experience over long distances, I had some epic drives over the Alpes and down to the South of France with the family. No roof box needed due to the enormous boot, the smoothness of the engine and gearbox aligned with the torque are superb for a road trip.

Despite it costing me a fortune to keep on the road I would have another....as soon as my finances have recovered!

diesel engine problem

BMW 5 SERIES 530d SE 4dr Auto (Review date: 30th October '11)

4.5

I first placed a review here after owning the car a few months.

this is the follow on after seven and a half years.

I have just seen a report on watchdog about this and can not understand why it has taken so long to come to the front

I recomend that if you are looking to buy diesel, make sure you drive at least 10 miles every time you start up and put your foot down every so often to blow out the toot

I put the car in for a MOT and service, I was prepared for a large bill because the car had not needed any work doing for quite some time.

I had all four brake pads replaced. oil and filter change.brake fluid change.pollon filter.and reported loss of power.they said air mass meter fault and charged £380 the car drove the same, returned car and they said glow plugs and refunded the £380 and charged £750. six months later same problem, and told the car now needs a decoke costing over £2000. but because I have had problems they will do a special offer of £1500, I asked for my car to be returned unrepaired and was charged almost £300 for the inspection.as you can imagine,Im not happy.I have looked after the car very very well, and always run it on shell V power fuel.the brake shoes lasted over 71000 miles and still did not need changing.I now think i looked after it too well.

you get more MPG with diesel but it is a differnt animal.

Amazing car

BMW 5 SERIES 535d SE 4dr Auto (Review date: 28th October '11)

4.5

I have owned two BMW 5 series in the space of 3 years. a 520i and now a 535d. Both amazing cars. They handle brilliantly, smooth on the road and look fantastic too.

The smaller engine 520 petrol was very good on fuel, i never actually checked my average MPG but i could go from London to Manchester and back on ONE full tank. Now that impressive. The bigger engine on the 535d is also very good. I average about 25-32 MPG. on long trips on the motorway i have got 50mpg driving very carefully.

Boot space is amazing, two full sized suit cases and a small bag can comfortably fit in there. I'd recommend leather seats if you have a family as spillages are easier to clean up, however i do not allow any form of food or drink in my car!

Obviously in tersm of performace the 535d is much more powerful, on demand you get amazing power, with a full car this is definately needed.

Maintanance of this car is expensive however i have a BMW specialist mechanic whos work is far better than BMW dealership! competeitive prices and he know his BMWs therefore i get all my work done by him, and i dont trust peoiple with my car often so when i find a reliable and good mechanic i stick to them.

all in all i will give the BMW 535d a 5 out of 5

Mr J Thompson

BMW 5 SERIES 535d M Sport 4dr Step Auto (Review date: 25th October '11)

My 5th 5 series.. This is a 535D Had the engine remapped i think it now has 350 BHP..

Phenomenal.. Just goes and never stops for air.. Performance wise a true supercar Hardly anything can touch it for acceleration.. All that and 40 mpg drive sedately and 50 mpg..

I may keep this one Lemans blue a future classic I think and how can I better it.. Its perfection..

Not dead keen on the new 5 shape.. They've taken out a few of the angles on my 07 one so its more jelly mouldish.. Maybe it will grow on me.. I am sure its a fantastic car..

Mine will do me for the forseeable future JGT

BMW 530d M Sport, (sport option with Paddle gear shift)

BMW 5 SERIES 530d M Sport 4dr Step Auto (Review date: 3rd October '11)

4.8

GRATE CAR, amazing in every way, and for something under 15K an absolute dream. Low consumption, amazing power, grip and torque, a great car all round.

make sure you buy one with FULL BMW service history, and it will not let you down. I have just done 7k in 8 weeks never had a problem with it went through 10 countries al the way to Greece and back again. I highly recommend this car, ALSO look out for the added sport option on the M sport/ i.e. paddle gear shift, and sport diff. which comes as an extra. Grate car.

AMAZING CAR ALL ROUND. Go for 530d M sport (sport option with Paddle gear shift) and make sure it has BMW Service history, if it doesn’t don’t bother no matter how cheap it may be.

Thanks, good luck.

The greatest Saloon ?

BMW 5 SERIES 525d M Sport 4dr (Review date: 24th September '11)

4.8

Top car in a great engine format ..... The handling is superb and the driver feels very involved in the drive without any hassle. A manual gearbox is no drawback as it adds to feeling of vehicle control.
