The BMW 525 diesel is good but there is still room for improvement
BMW 5 SERIES 525d SE 4dr Auto (Review date: 2nd November '11)
This is my 3rd 5 series [ last 2 2.5 diesel ] and in most areas this model is probably the best.
The build quality is superb and the space and handling leave little to be desired, but I do have 2 gripes :-
1. the run-flat tyres are a great idea but, in my opinion, the ride suffers too much and the car does not feel as luxurious as the previous models [ which did not have run-flats ]'
2. Fuel consumption is good at motorway speeds but drops dramatically around Town.I currently achieve 32mpg overall, whereas my previous car, a Mercedes CLK 2.7 tdi managed 41mpg under similar usage.
Despite the above I will probably buy another one in due course !

Best car I have ever owned
BMW 5 SERIES 530d SE 4dr Auto (Review date: 1st November '11)
I have owned and driven many cars, including other BMW's, but nothing I have driven compares to the overall experience of my 530D. It is comfortable and spacious, plus it has all the acceleration you need to quickly and safely overtake, while not being too heavy at the fuel pumps if reasonable monitoring is maintained. Excellent motorway cruiser and also handles the twisties if you are in the mood.
The perfect car?
BMW 5 SERIES 520d SE 4dr Step Auto (Review date: 31st October '11)
So this is my second 520d. My first one did 160,000 miles over four years. This one has done 120,000. Neither has had a single problem.
It's big and comfortable and rides so well even with run flat tyres. It has a BIG boot, although I will need a touring version next time. The parking sensors make it SO easy to park.
Performance is what you expect from 163 bhp in a big car. There are bigger engines if you need more poke.
Running costs? 46mpg from an auto, my previous manual version averaged 49mpg, c£200 tax & £600 to insure. Tyres @ £150-200 will last 20-30,000 miles.
If you get a chance to buy one of these take it. You will not be disappointed.
BMW 530D Sport Great Car but expensive.
BMW 5 SERIES 530d Sport 4dr Auto (Review date: 31st October '11)
I loved this car despite it having 2 turbo failures in 3 years, I was told by the garage that this was probably due to the previous owner not servicing the car properly, mainly changing the oil every year. The second failure they said was due to the oil feeder pipe being blocked by oil sludge. The car had done 70000 miles at the time of the first failure and 82000 at the second. A friend who had a 520 D had the same problem at 90000 miles.
However, the thing I loved most was the driving experience over long distances, I had some epic drives over the Alpes and down to the South of France with the family. No roof box needed due to the enormous boot, the smoothness of the engine and gearbox aligned with the torque are superb for a road trip.
Despite it costing me a fortune to keep on the road I would have another....as soon as my finances have recovered!
awesome combining style comfort power and economy
BMW 5 SERIES 525d SE 4dr (Review date: 31st October '11)
best car i've ever owned. after 111000 miles still drives much better than any other car I've driven .It's smooth powerful roomy economical, the ride is superb. The car is pure class.Only drawback is runflat tyres which I have replaced with non runflats but keep puncture repair compound in the boot.
diesel engine problem
BMW 5 SERIES 530d SE 4dr Auto (Review date: 30th October '11)
I first placed a review here after owning the car a few months.
this is the follow on after seven and a half years.
I have just seen a report on watchdog about this and can not understand why it has taken so long to come to the front
I recomend that if you are looking to buy diesel, make sure you drive at least 10 miles every time you start up and put your foot down every so often to blow out the toot
I put the car in for a MOT and service, I was prepared for a large bill because the car had not needed any work doing for quite some time.
I had all four brake pads replaced. oil and filter change.brake fluid change.pollon filter.and reported loss of power.they said air mass meter fault and charged £380 the car drove the same, returned car and they said glow plugs and refunded the £380 and charged £750. six months later same problem, and told the car now needs a decoke costing over £2000. but because I have had problems they will do a special offer of £1500, I asked for my car to be returned unrepaired and was charged almost £300 for the inspection.as you can imagine,Im not happy.I have looked after the car very very well, and always run it on shell V power fuel.the brake shoes lasted over 71000 miles and still did not need changing.I now think i looked after it too well.
you get more MPG with diesel but it is a differnt animal.
BMW 5 SERIES 535d SE 4dr Auto (Review date: 28th October '11)
I have owned two BMW 5 series in the space of 3 years. a 520i and now a 535d. Both amazing cars. They handle brilliantly, smooth on the road and look fantastic too.
The smaller engine 520 petrol was very good on fuel, i never actually checked my average MPG but i could go from London to Manchester and back on ONE full tank. Now that impressive. The bigger engine on the 535d is also very good. I average about 25-32 MPG. on long trips on the motorway i have got 50mpg driving very carefully.
Boot space is amazing, two full sized suit cases and a small bag can comfortably fit in there. I'd recommend leather seats if you have a family as spillages are easier to clean up, however i do not allow any form of food or drink in my car!
Obviously in tersm of performace the 535d is much more powerful, on demand you get amazing power, with a full car this is definately needed.
Maintanance of this car is expensive however i have a BMW specialist mechanic whos work is far better than BMW dealership! competeitive prices and he know his BMWs therefore i get all my work done by him, and i dont trust peoiple with my car often so when i find a reliable and good mechanic i stick to them.
all in all i will give the BMW 535d a 5 out of 5
