SEAT Ibiza Cupra debuts in China
Monday 23 April 2012
• Sporty range topper for the SEAT Ibiza supermini
• 1.4-litre twin-charged petrol engine
• Twin-clutch DSG gearbox as standard
The SEAT Ibiza Cupra Concept has been unveiled at the Beijing Motor Show.
Officially a ‘close-to-production concept car’, the Ibiza Cupra will become the Spanish company’s sportiest B segment offering.
It will use the same 178bhp 1.4-litre twin-charged (both turbo and supercharged) engine as seen in other Volkswagen Group products the Audi A1 and Volkswagen Polo GTI. As in those cars, it will be equipped with a twin-clutch automatic gearbox as standard.
The paddle operated gearbox ensures seamless power delivery from the rorty four-cylinder motor. Handy, particularly when there is a maximum of 184lb/ft of pulling power on tap. An XDS electronic differential lock is also fitted as standard, to distribute power between the wheels and ensure maximum traction in the bends.
The Cupra Concept is based on the three-door architecture of the recently released Ibiza SC. Alongside that car’s taut and angular lines, it features sporty detailing to highlight its performance focus. A broader front bumper and deeper set air intakes give the Cupra a wide, planted stance. At the back is a redesigned diffuser and trapezoidal exhaust.
The bi-xenon headlights are lined with LED daytime running lights to give the Cupra its own distinct night time aesthetic, while the front fog lamps feature integrated cornering lights.
The Concept unveiled in Beijing is finished in a vivid Crono Yellow paint with gloss black detailing. It sits on 17-inch alloy wheels.
The interior is given a similarly sporting bent, with a Cupra logo’d sports steering wheel, newly designed instruments and leather seats with yellow detailing putting drivers in the right frame of mind.
A new sat-nav and hands free system also debuts on the Cupra Concept. Called SEAT Portable System, it uses a 5-inch screen which is removable from the vehicle for mobile use.
The production version of the Seat Ibiza Cupra is due to go on sale later this year. Prices have yet to be confirmed but are expected to be start at around £18,000.
