61 Plate Special – Five most anticipated cars
Thursday 01 September 2011
There’s a crop of new motors getting ready to hit our streets. Which are the top five most eagerly anticipated cars to wear the new plate?
Here are our choices:
1. BMW 1-Series
The distinctive new face of the BMW 1-Series hopes to take bites out of the hatch back market with an improved drive and more efficient 116i and 118i petrol and slightly revised diesel engine options delivering more low rev torque and better CO2 emissions. Prices start from £19,375.
2. Range Rover Evoque
One to whip the ‘chattering classes’ into a frenzy of anticipation as a super stylish take on the Ranger’s go-anywhere persona. Billed as the ultimate crossover, the Evoque is a fashion statement for image conscious motorists.
But high ground clearance, four-wheel drive and a full menu of selectable off-road assist technology makes this a serious tool. Prices are competitive too, starting at £27,995.
3. Golf Cabriolet
The return of the much-loved soft-top Golf Cabriolet after nearly ten years makes this another car set to be a firm favourite among the fashionistas. With a roof activation of just 9.5 seconds, there will be little excuse not to spend most of your drive time with the roof down.
Stylish and sleek, with superb build quality and a guaranteed good residual value, the Cabriolet is bound to be one of this season’s big hitters. Prices start from £20,605.
4. Vauxhall Astra GTC
You’ll have to wait a while for this to gain even a 70-plate as it is due to make its debut in September’s Frankfurt Motorshow and arrive in the UK next June. But Vauxhall say it’s worth the wait as they claim the GTC will out-handle anything else in its class.
Early pictures are promising as, with aggressive LED eye-brow front lights, 21-inch alloys and a low slung sleek body which seats five passengers in comfort, the GTC looks like it will deliver. Expect prices to compete against the Renault Megane Coupe.
5. Morgan 3 Wheeler
Motoring doesn’t come much more left-field, but it is hard not to love this wonderfully British eccentric. Modern technology allows Morgan to go back to its three wheeler racing roots as, using a simple 115bhp V-twin motorcycle engine coupled to a chassis weighing just 500kgs.
Zero to 60mph comes up in 4.5 seconds on the way to a top speed of 110mph assuming you can stand the wind buffeting. Despite a price tag of £30,000 Morgan has taken at least 500 orders so expect to see a 61-plater near you soon.
