BMW 6 SeriesThis concept car demonstrates how the next BMW 6 Series coupe will look.

The car has a profile similar to the current 3 Series coupe, and no longer has the distinctive stepped boot shape of its predecessor.

The concept car, to be shown at the Paris Motor Show, continues the styling trend of modern BMWs by having a bigger version of its familiar kidney grill.

Inside, the cabin has a similar look to the latest 5 Series saloons, which are said to share much of their sub structures with the latest 6 Series, making it likely to have more space inside than before.

Production versions are set to have a selection of high capacity diesel engines, together with a range of petrol motors, notably for M Series performance cars.

Rivals are likely to include the Jaguar XK8, Porsche 911 and Mercedes SL.

It is likely that a convertible will follow next year, and BMW could use the model as the basis for a four-door fastback rival to the Mercedes CLS. This would appear in 2012.

BMW displayed a concept car with these features at the Beijing motor show earlier this year.

The original 6 Series, launched in 1976, was a big success for its makers.
