Peugeot has launched a six-month pilot scheme for a new ‘mobility service’.

Mu by Peugeot allows customers to rent a specific vehicle from the manufacturer’s range, including bikes, scooters, cars and vans. The scheme includes coupe cabriolets as well as the new RCZ, and Peugeot guarantees each vehicle will be no more than six months old.

Potential customers must first register their details online at the dedicated Mu by Peugeot website, in order to buy points which can be exchanged for vehicles as well as accessories such as roof boxes, bike racks and sat-nav systems.

Vehicles must be pre-booked and will be prepared to suit each customer’s requirements.

Vehicles must be collected and returned to the same dealership but, unlike regular rental schemes, mileage is unlimited. Drivers must be over the age of 21, although more powerful cars on the scheme are restricted to over 25-year-olds who hold no more than six points on their licence.

The pilot scheme is currently limited to two Robins and Day Peugeot Dealerships, located in London and Bristol. Peugeot is hoping to increase the number of dealerships running the scheme next year and to allow points bought in the UK to be used in different European countries.

Peugeot will monitor demand of cars with the aim of ensuring customers aren’t disappointed by at peak times, such as weekends. The scheme is already running across Europe – in Paris the RCZ, for instance, is already booked to capacity.

Peugeot plans to have 10,000 registered customers by the end of 2010, across nine countries by the end of 2011 and 200 cities by the end of 2012.
