The Volkswagen Group has been awarded the International Engine of the Year award with its 1.4-litre TSI Twincharger, as seen in the Volkswagen Polo, Golf, Scirocco, Eos and Tiguan; and the Seat Ibiza Cupra and Skoda Fabia vRS.

It’s the second year in a row the 1.4 TSI has taken overall victory in the competition.

Fitted with a supercharger, turbocharger and direct fuel injection it produces more than 150bhp, despite being just 1.4-litres in size, which means it can replace a conventional 2-litre petrol engine.

It’s efficient too, returning more than 45mpg in most of its applications and emitting around 145g/km of CO2.

There were also awards for the best engines in various categories, with winners ranging from the Toyota Prius 1.8-litre (best green engine) to the 6.2-litre Mercedes-AMG fitted in the SLS supercar (best engine above 4-litres and best performance engine).

Winners were chosen by a panel of 72 motoring journalists from 35 countries.
