Vauxhall targets BMW and Audi with Insignia VXR

Vauxhall has released official details of its new four-wheel drive Insignia VXR super-saloon.
The 319bhp Insignia VXR will accelerate from 0-62mph in 5.8 seconds before hitting an electronically-limited 155mph.
Vauxhall has fitted the Insignia VXR with the same 2.8-litre V6 engine as the ‘Elite’ model – but increased power by 64bhp using a twin-scroll turbocharger and a variable valve control.
This puts it in the firing line of the BMW 335i and Audi S4 but with a considerably lower price expected.
The VXR is the first Vauxhall to use four-wheel drive with the car’s bespoke chassis honed on the Nürburgring race track in Germany.
The 4x4 system also features a limited slip differential which will channel power to the wheel with most grip through the corners, cutting out understeer.
The Insignia VXR features Brembo brakes, a 10mm lower ride height, stiffer suspension and bespoke tyres for the 19-inch alloy wheels for a sportier ride.
Cosmetically, the Insignia VXR gets a deeper bumper incorporating two mesh grilles either side of the main grille with dual chrome exhausts at the rear.
Inside, there are plenty of VXR decals while the driver and front passenger get a set of Recaro seats.
The hot Insignia will be the second most powerful Vauxhall on sale, behind the 431bhp VXR8. It goes on sale in the summer.
