A new 1.4-litre turbo engine producing 140bhp replaces the current 1.8-litre engine, with lower emissions, equal power and 15 per cent more torque.

Three other petrol engines include a 1.4-litre engine which emits 129g/km of CO2 and two standard 1.6-litre engines. One will be turbocharged producing 180bhp and the other standard with 115bhp.

The new Vauxhall Astra's diesel engines include 1.3, 1.7 and 2-litre units, with combined CO2 emissions of less than 129g/km. Their power will range from 95bhp to 160bhp.

A green ecoFLEX model will also be added to the range at a later date, achieving 109g/km of CO2. This places it into tax band B costing £20 per year from April 2009.

The new Astra makes its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show on September 15. It will be available in dealerships by December 2009.

Vauxhall has not yet revealed full CO2 emissions and fuel consumption figures for the Astra engine line up. Expect these to be announced later in the year.
