25 April 2008 Vijay Pattni rounds up the top ten music videos where the cars are the stars. Jamiroquai – Cosmic Girl Jamiroquai frontman Jay Kay is a bona-fide petrolhead and one of the coolest men alive – he has a host of exotic supercars tucked away in his garage, he headed up the Top Gear power lap leaderboard and when Jeremy Clarkson asked to borrow his Enzo Ferrari, he replied: “Yeah, if you let me borrow your daughter, because it amounts to the same thing.” The Clash – Should I Stay or Should I Go One of the greatest Brit anthems of all time gets one of the coolest cars in the music video – a 1959 Cadillac. This punk song from early 1982 gave birth to those immortal opening lines, and featured the uber-cool band rolling around in an American classic.
Robbie Williams – Millennium Former Take That star Robbie Williams wanted to be the next James Bond – and proved it with this tongue-in-cheek video showcasing the classic Bond ornaments: beautiful girls, powerboats – and the Aston Martin DB5. The closing scenes of the video frame the glorious DB5 along a typical British country road with the sampled theme from "You Only Live Twice" – as Rob peers around from a three-wheeled motor. Girls Aloud – Something Kinda Ooh The winners of talent show Popstars: The Rivals in 2002, Girls Aloud are one of the world’s biggest girl groups and have released five platinum selling albums and a host of number one hits. This hit from 2006 features Kimberly, Cheryl, Nadine, Sarah and Nicola strutting their stuff and roaring away in two fabulous TVRs.
The Specials – Ghost Town The Specials scored a succession of number one hits in the late 70s and early 80s – and it was recently announced the group will be reforming. And this track from 1981 reached the number one spot in the UK charts, featuring the band roaming around an eerily deserted London town in a classic Vauxhall PA Cresta. ZZ Top – Gimme All Your Lovin This Texas three-piece displayed some of the finest guitar work – and beards – in rock, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004 by Rolling Stones legend Keith Richards. And their modified 1933 Ford Hot Rod – dubbed “The Eliminator” – is almost as famous as their tunes, featuring in no less than three videos, including this – 1983’s Gimme All Your Lovin, which kicks off with the roaring sound of a Ford Hot Rod… Dr Dre and Snoop Doggy Dogg – Still D.R.E One of hip-hop’s most influential and powerful artists, Dr. Dre – real name Andre Young – marked his return to the hip-hop forefront with his six-time platinum selling 2001. And Dre’s love of old school American lowriders is in full effect – the video features a host of classic rides with crazy hydraulics bouncing up and down the street to those infectious beats… War – Low Rider And speaking of low riders… Californian US funk band War are one of the most successful crossover bands in history, blending rock, funk, jazz and reggae to come up with massively popular tunes. And this hit from 1975 says it all – Low Rider featured a number of US classics including Fords, Buicks and Chevys, coupled to a driving bassline. Nizlopi – JCB Song Featuring an award-winning animated video, this 2005 hit which was beaten to the Christmas number one spot by X-Factor winner Shayne Ward, was sung from the viewpoint of five-year-old Luke – the band’s lead singer – as he and his Dad travel to work in a JCB – with Transformers hero Optimus Prime and the A-Team Van in tow, before the JCB suddenly sprouts wings… David Hasselhoff – Jump In My Car This hilarious tongue-in-cheek hit from 2006 was part of Radio 1’s “Get Hasselhoff to Number One” campaign in a bid to get the iconic actor from 80’s TV show Knight Rider to the top of the charts. And the car played on the Hoff’s greatest co-star – the 1983 Pontiac Trans Am – K.I.T.T. |
