The world's sexiest cars
13 February 2009
Vijay Pattni rounds up the world’s most lusted-after motors.
What makes a car ‘sexy’?
Is it the curves, the power of a muscle-bound BHP banger – or the control of one-and-a-half tonnes of steel, plastic and leather?
Truth is, nobody really knows what makes a car sexy. Some have suggested the feeling of being in charge of a highly dangerous machine at high speeds provides a thrill.
Others claim the anthropomorphic qualities of motors – that means, transferring human characteristics onto cars – is a stronger factor. Take, for example, the classic Ford Cortina Mk III, Dodge Charger and Pontiac GTOs with their unique ‘Coke-bottle’ lines.
And who can forget the utterly ‘feminine’ curves of countless Ferraris through the decades?
Cars have long been associated with human features – the ‘face’ of a car, represented by its headlights, grille and front spoiler; the car’s ‘rear’; the ‘waist’, or midriff.
Whatever this notion of ‘sexy’ translates as, the world is brimming with endless motors built for one thing – to set pulses racing.
From the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione, the Lamborghini Gallardo, the Aston Martin DBS, McLaren F1, Audi R8, Corvette Z06, Koenigsegg CCXR, Pagani Zonda – and even the Nissan GT-R – we’ve rounded up the very best the world has to offer.
We’ve also included some old school favourites like the Aston Martin DB5, the original Mini and the Jaguar E-Type.
