Lewis Hamilton pays £200,000 for LEW 1S plate
17 June 2008 F1 ace Lewis Hamilton has reportedly splashed out £200,000 on the personalised registration LEW 1S. McLaren number one Lewis Hamilton bought the plate LEW 1S from property tycoon Bob Lewis. But Lewis Hamilton won’t be putting the plate on a £317,000 McLaren Mercedes SLR or 240mph McLaren F1. He’ll be fitting it on his £63,000 Mercedes GL420 4x4 – a DIESEL off-roader Hamilton described onTop Gear as a ‘pimp wagon’ which will ‘house 24-inch wheels’. The motorsport hotshot has a £75 million pound five year contract with McLaren and will make a further £10 million through a sponsorship deal with Reebok. And thanks to his commercial potential, some experts have forecast Hamilton to be the first sportsman to make £1 billion – beating Tiger Woods and David Beckham to the mammoth amount. Lewis Hamilton is having a tumultuous second season in F1 and is currently second in the drivers’ championship behind shock leader Robert Kubica. But the Stevenage-born star was involved in a collision with champion Kimi Raikkonen after a lapse of concentration at the Canadian Grand Prix – leading to a ten place grid penalty for the forthcoming French Grand Prix. What F1 stars think of Lewis Hamilton While £200,000 reported in the Telegraph is a hefty amount to fork out on a plate, it’s not the most expensive registration in the UK. Afzal Kahn, the owner of tuners Project Kahn, has the record for a British plate, paying £375,000 for ‘F1’. But that’s nothing compared to the world record where a crazy bidding war between two Middle-Eastern businessman broke out over the plate ‘1’ with the auction ending on an insane £7 million. |
