Jay Kay meets his supercar match
13 March 2009
He’s super-rich, idolised and has sold millions of albums – but at the end of the day Jamiroquai frontman Jay Kay is a normal guy who really loves his cars.
And with a collection of around 35 cars and bikes including a Ferrari Enzo, Mercedes Grosser, original Fiat 500 Abarth, Porsche 911 GT3 RS and Bentley Arnage - he’s certainly faced with a quandary each morning over what to drive.
But there’s one car he hasn’t got – an ultra-rare Lamborghini Reventon, but a Suffolk-based dealer made Jay Kay’s day when they showed up with one for him to have a look at.
Mike Lee from New Marque Specialist Cars got a call from Dominic Mulvey, the sales manager at Lamborghini in Birmingham saying a customer had a Reventon.
Knowing how impressed he would be, Mike – who took a McLaren F1 down to Jay Kay’s house in 1998 – spent ten weeks trying to arrange a suitable date for the Virtual Insanity singer to meet the motoring icon.
He said: “As we know Jay Kay, he asked us if we wanted to arrange a meeting for him to see the car.
“We arrived at Jay Kay's house in a Porsche Carrera GT, which he took out for a spin.
"When he got back, the Reventon was sitting on his driveway. He didn't end up taking it for a drive but he was pleased just to see it in his grounds."
The Lamborghini Reventon in question was the last of 20 to roll off the production line at the Italian supercar maker’s Sant’ Agata-based factory near Bologna – and the only one in the UK.
With its fighter jet-style design, rarity and mouth-watering performance, the Lamborghini became a sensation when announced in 2007 – with all 20 sold before it made its first public appearance.
Under the bonnet is a 6.5-litre V12 engine which develops 650bhp and enables a 0-62mph time of 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 211mph.
Cars as rare and special as the Lamborghini Reventon are often bought by investors who hold on to the cars and lock them away to make a profit at a later date.
And it’s emerged that seven of the 20 Reventons are currently for sale worldwide with one in Dubai, two in the USA and four on the market in Germany – all for sale at a considerable increase over the original price.
But it’s unlikely this Lamborghini will go up for sale.
According to Lamborghini, the unnamed owner of the UK’s only Reventon ‘is committed to driving his car rather than simply garaging it.’
