The UK’s most popular family cars and hatchbacks won’t be hit quite as hard as MPVs and sports cars – but their petrol variants will. Buy a Volkswagen Golf with a 1.4-litre petrol engine and you’ll lose £170 as opposed to a 1.9-litre diesel Golf which will save you £20.

Motorists with saloons such as the Ford Mondeo and Jaguar XF will suffer a £50 tax increase next year, a first-year charge of £425 in 2010 and a £60 raise in 2011***. The BMW 520d is a good economical choice but the 3.0-litre diesel will set you back an extra £95.

Larger cars will face larger bills next year – the 3.6-litre diesel Range Rover will be hit with an added tax fee of £645 in total. For the green motorist, the electric Range Rover will be exempt from tax but isn't available until early 2009.
Drivers of high CO2-emitting roadsters will have to pay out hundreds of pounds more over the next few years. Owners of Porsche 911s with 3.6-litre petrol engines will feel a £950 car tax sting in March 2010.
Showroom tax If you buy a new car after April 2010, you'll have to pay a new first-year rate based on its CO2 emissions. Cars which emit less than 130g/km of CO2 will be exempt from car tax for the year, but more polluting cars will face higher fees - motorists will have to pay £950 to tax a vehicle which emits more than 255g/km.
