07 May 2008 With both Manchester United and Chelsea in with the chance of doing a historic double, Andy Goodwin looks at who’s won the premiership of cars. View pictures of the footballer's cars Chelsea Michael Ballack German midfielder Michael Ballack has owned a string of Teutonic cars – and an Audi Q7 is his current steed. The powerful SUV is solid, and has plenty of presence while being a luxurious cruiser. The range-topping 4.2-litre V8 has 345bhp, making it a quick car – but it would struggle to keep up with the sports cars favoured by his team mates. Andriy Shevchenko Shevchenko is a £30m striker from the Ukraine, and the highest scoring Ukrainian footballer in history. He drives a Porsche 911 Turbo, the 473bhp four-wheel-drive supercar, launched in 2006. This evolution of the Porsche 911 hits 60mph from standstill in just 3.6 seconds and has a top speed of just under 200mph. Didier Drogba Ivorian Didier Drogba was the top Premiership scorer in 2006-7 with 20 goals and helped dump Liverpool out of the Champions League this season after scoring a brace at Stamford Bridge. He drives a Mercedes SL65 AMG convertible, which has a huge 6-litre V12 engine pumping out more than 600bhp. Even more impressive is its 739lb/ft of pulling power – a whole ocean of power lies under Drogba’s right foot. John Terry Chelsea captain John Terry is the proud owner of a Ferrari F430, the ‘entry-level’ Ferrari supercar with a top speed of more than 190mph. Its V8 engine screams as it gathers 483bhp and channels them all to its rear wheels via a gearbox honed from a Formula 1 car.
The cars of the rich and famous
Claude Makelele Chelsea defensive midfielder Claude Makelele drives a 208mph Mercedes McLaren SLR supercar. It is the ultimate toy for those who want to go fast and still drive casually to the shops when the mood takes. Its supercharged 617bhp V8 engine is silky smooth driven slowly, and sounds like a fighter plane when exercised. But it does cost £350,000. Frank Lampard London-born Frank Lampard owns arguably the ultimate British car – the Aston Martin Vanquish. It was launched in 2001 and is still the fastest Aston Martin ever built, sitting at the top of its range until production ceased last year. The 520bhp V12 Vanquish is also one of the most glorious sounding engines ever to grace a sports car. Its appearance in James Bond movie Die Another Day cemented its cool demeanour.
The celebrities’ must-have cars
Manchester United Gary Neville SUV’s always used to be slow and pondering, but not anymore – this Range Rover Sport owned by Man United captain Gary Neville is akin to the hot hatch of the four-wheel-drive club. Choose one of the V8 petrol engines and performance is brisk, while the sharp chassis provides lots of feedback and resistance to body roll. Six great celebrity cars for sale on Auto Trader Cristiano Ronaldo Ronaldo is widely regarded as one of the world’s most talented footballers, capable of playing on either wing with equally devastating results and banging in 31 league goals this season. His Audi R8 is surefooted too, using Audi’s Quattro four-wheel-drive system and high-tech suspension to keep it pinned to the road. It shares parts with the Lamborghini Gallardo, but has a bargain price tag of just over £70k. Car Videos: Bugatti Veyron vs Ronaldo The ultimate footballers' car collections
Ryan Giggs A favourite choice of the discerning footballer is the Bentley Continental GT, thanks to its combination of speed and beauty. Its grand appearance from the outside is more than matched by the atmosphere inside, where you will find only the finest interior appointments. When money is no object, the Bentley is a fine choice. Like Manchester United’s most successful player Ryan Giggs, the Bentley is a popular feature among the Old Trafford club’s training ground.

Rio Ferdinand While the newer Continental GT steals the limelight, the Bentley Arnage is still the choice of many fine gentleman. Its more traditional saloon layout has a timeless appeal, as does its 6.8-litre V8 which drives the car along with quiet grace. Wayne Rooney Wayne Rooney’s Mercedes CLK DTM is one of only 100 and it would have cost around £200k new. Since then it could even have appreciated in value thanks to its rarity. Mercedes fitted a speed-limiter to all DTM’s to stop them from passing 199mph, but it should be capable of 220mph if Wayne finds a way to have it removed. |
