The ten races you must see in 2008
28 January 2008 Whether you want to see the hottest supercars in action, support Lewis Hamilton or see the Top Gear team there’s a wealth of racing action to choose from. Trackside’s Keith Collantine picks the ten best races around Britain and nearby in 2008. British GT championship and British Formula Three What better way to spend a bank holiday than at the gorgeous Cheshire parkland circuit Oulton Park? The racing bill packs a great variety of action. The British GT championship features a host of race-tuned supercars including Aston Martin DBRS9s, Ferrari 430s and the stunning Lamborghini Gallardo (see link below). The British F3 championship kicks off as well, with top young racers bidding to become tomorrow’s F1 drivers. Hot Lamborghini Gallardo’s British debut A1 Grand Prix Halfway through the third World Cup of Motorsport the British team is down in eighth place. But the championship race is closer than it’s ever been and Team Britain could well be fighting for the title at the Brands Hatch season finale. Formula 1 British Grand Prix If you want to watch Lewis Hamilton’s bid to win his home Grand Prix you’ll have to move fast – tickets for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone are selling twice as quickly as they were last year. Three-day tickets aren’t cheap, but with two excellent GP2 races supporting the F1 action and plenty more going on, you get a lot for your money. Camp nearby to get the most out of the weekend.
After Silverstone you can pack up your camping gear and head across the Channel to see one of the world’s great races – the Le Mans 24 Hours. Home team Peugeot will be doing everything they can to stop Audi from scoring another win in their crushingly dominant R10 (see link below). And Aston Martin will bid to win their class in their beautiful new Gulf-liveried cars. Audi R8 diesel – from racetrack to road British Touring Car Championship You’re spoiled for choice for great venues to watch the thrill-packed British Touring Car Championship. Knockhill in Scotland may be a trek for some but the short, narrow track and often inclement weather always produces great races. If Knockhill’s too far away for you head for the round at Rockingham in Northamptonshire instead. The massive US-style oval offers spectacular views of the entire track. European Grand Prix If you can’t get tickets for the British round than why not jet out to Spain for this stunning new addition to the F1 calendar? The cars will be racing around the streets of the picturesque harbour front of Valencia. And with Fernando Alonso’s home fans out in force, Lewis Hamilton will need all the support he can get.
Top Gear fans will remember Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, James May and The Stig’s antics in last year’s race. The team have not ruled out a return in 2008, Jeremy Clarkson recently saying: “Next year, I suspect we may be back.” Don’t miss it! World Touring Car Championship Britain’s Andy Priaulx is the Michael Schumacher of touring cars. He’s won the world title for the last three years running, plus in 2004 when it was the European championship. He’ll be out to repeat last year’s home victory so head on over to Brands Hatch to lend him some support along with fellow British racers Rob Huff and James Thompson. Rally of Great Britaiin If mud, gravel and flame-spitting rally cars is you thing, head for the forests of Wales in December for the British rally. Our man Andy Goodwin was there last year so check out his tips on visiting the rally if you’re heading there. Race of Champions 2008 Heading to Wembley football stadium for a race may seem unusual, but the Race of Champions is a unique and intriguing event. World class racers from different disciplines race head-to-head in a range of machinery. Last year Michael Schumacher raced a host of other F1 stars. The organisers are hoping to pit him against Lewis Hamilton this year, which would be unmissable. What races are you going to in 2008? Have your say on the Auto Trader blog. |
