16 May 2008 Vijay Pattni rounds up the most expensive Ferraris being auctioned this weekend at the Italian carmaker’s home in Maranello, Italy – including the classic Ferrari 250 California Spider and Ferrari Enzo – for the annual ‘Ferrari - Leggenda e Passione’ event. Lot 328 – 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider: £2.5 million
This Ferrari 250 GT California Spider features a 3-litre V12 engine producing 280bhp, and is the 13th model of 56. The car was completed in 1961, and in 1964, found itself in the hands of second owner and Hollywood star James Coburn, who lived in California and had recently finished filming 1963’s The Great Escape.
Lot 337 – 1958 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spyder: £1.9 million
And the 250 California has recently undergone a massive mechanical overhaul – meaning the two-million-pound Ferrari should be as fresh as the day it was built.
Lot 317 – 1971 Ferrari 512M: £1.6 million
The 512S was first introduced to the world in 1969, and Ferrari planned to build just 25 examples to allow them to race in the FIA Group 5 Sports Car category. Only 22 Ferrari 512s were built, and 16 are believed to have survived to this day. Of those 16, only 12 are the ‘M’ spec – making this one of the rarest Ferraris in the world.
Lot 322 – 1951 Ferrari 340 America Coupe: £956,000
This example for sale in Maranello is one of the rarest. It retains all its original components, including body, chassis, and drivetrain. And despite its racing pedigree, it has never been crashed, re-bodied or had an engine transplant.
Lot 314 – 2006 Maserati MC12: £875,000
It shares many of its parts with the Ferrari Enzo, and features a 6-litre V12 engine developing 550bhp, which helped it to win 12 races in the 2006 Italian GT series, which Maserati hadn’t succeeded in since 1967.
Lot 313 – 1990 Ferrari F40/LM: £795,000
But where the normal Ferrari F40 develops 480bhp, this hardcore LM (Le Mans) racing edition churns out 720bhp, and features a lighter body, stiffer suspension, harder brakes and a racing gearbox – meaning it can cover the 0-62mph dash in just 3.1 seconds. And if you remove the air restrictors on the engine, it is said to produce an eye-watering 785bhp.
