£20 million Ferrari auction - News image
This hardcore Ferrari F40 LM (Le Mans) racing edition churns out 720bhp

16 May 2008

Ferrari throws open the doors to its HQ this weekend in one of the world’s most prestigious auctions – with more than £20 million worth of Ferraris up for grabs.

Vijay Pattni rounds up the most expensive Ferraris being auctioned this weekend at the Italian carmaker’s home in Maranello, Italy – including the classic Ferrari 250 California Spider and Ferrari Enzo – for the annual ‘Ferrari - Leggenda e Passione’ event.

Lot 328 – 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider: £2.5 million

The most beautiful Ferrari ever.

This Ferrari 250 GT California Spider features a 3-litre V12 engine producing 280bhp, and is the 13th model of 56.

The car was completed in 1961, and in 1964, found itself in the hands of second owner and Hollywood star James Coburn, who lived in California and had recently finished filming 1963’s The Great Escape.

Lot 337 – 1958 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spyder: £1.9 million

This Ferrari 250 California Spider is the third model built out of around 100 total examples, and features the same 3-litre V12 engine as teh SWB model, producing 240bhp.

And the 250 California has recently undergone a massive mechanical overhaul – meaning the two-million-pound Ferrari should be as fresh as the day it was built.

Lot 317 – 1971 Ferrari 512M: £1.6 million

One of the fastest Ferraris ever built, this 620bhp 5-litre V12-engined racer is capable of speeds over 235mph.

The 512S was first introduced to the world in 1969, and Ferrari planned to build just 25 examples to allow them to race in the FIA Group 5 Sports Car category.

Only 22 Ferrari 512s were built, and 16 are believed to have survived to this day. Of those 16, only 12 are the ‘M’ spec – making this one of the rarest Ferraris in the world.

Lot 322 – 1951 Ferrari 340 America Coupe: £956,000

The stunning Ferrari 340 America Coupe two-door racer features a 4.1-litre V12 engine producing 230bhp, and came fifth in the Carrera Panamericana race series in the early 1950s.

This example for sale in Maranello is one of the rarest. It retains all its original components, including body, chassis, and drivetrain. And despite its racing pedigree, it has never been crashed, re-bodied or had an engine transplant.

Lot 314 – 2006 Maserati MC12: £875,000

More expensive than the ultra-rare Bugatti Veyron, this Maserati MC12 is the 2006 Italian GT Championship winning racecar.

It shares many of its parts with the Ferrari Enzo, and features a 6-litre V12 engine developing 550bhp, which helped it to win 12 races in the 2006 Italian GT series, which Maserati hadn’t succeeded in since 1967.

Lot 313 – 1990 Ferrari F40/LM: £795,000

One of the hardest and fastest Ferraris gets a serious dose of horsepower – this 1990 Ferrari F40/LM features a twin-turbocharged 3-litre V8 engine.

But where the normal Ferrari F40 develops 480bhp, this hardcore LM (Le Mans) racing edition churns out 720bhp, and features a lighter body, stiffer suspension, harder brakes and a racing gearbox – meaning it can cover the 0-62mph dash in just 3.1 seconds.

And if you remove the air restrictors on the engine, it is said to produce an eye-watering 785bhp.
