15 March 2010

The new BMW 5 Series Touring – the estate version of Munich’s latest executive saloon – has just been announced.

The new 5 Series Touring is bigger and more practical than the car it replaces, with 60 litres more space with the seats up (now 560 litres) and 20 more with them down (1,670 litres).

However, practicality has always been a secondary priority for BMW’s Touring range – style has long been their major selling point and this fourth-generation 5 series Touring is no exception.

Its front end is identical to the new saloon but it’s all new aft of the rear doors, with a swoopy roofline and steeply raked rear screen. It might not be as capacious as a Mercedes E-class estate, but it’s far sleeker.

The estate’s engine range will mirror that of the saloon when sales start in September, from the top-selling 520d – which manages to average 54.3mpg – up to the 302bhp 535i. An even hotter M5 version is expected to follow next year.

All models will be equipped with self-levelling rear suspension and a six-speed manual gearbox, while an eight-speed automatic will be offered as an option.

Prices will start at £30,380 for the 520d.
